Ok here is the situation. Just trying to help a friend out. He has a 1999 CTD which he blew the motor on. He purchased a used motor from an 01 and installed it. (BTW this was before he consulted my help) He realized that the Crank Sensor was missing from from the 01 motor but installed it thinking that the 01 ECM would take care of it, or worst case he would just be without a Tach. Well now he has the motor installed and running, and of course he doesn't have a Tach. Also the Alt is not charging. I did a search and found that If the tach doesn't work It won't send a signal to make the Alt function, AC or the Odom.

So My question. Is there any way to make this setup work or function without pulling the motor and swapping the crank shaft, and installing the Crank sensor?

I personally don't know much about this, I told him I would post for him to see if I could get an answer. Thank You all for any help!!

I've had the misfortune of doing this same swap for a friend. It's taken everybit of 18 months to get the bugs worked out and there's still one that I'm having trouble with. You can get the tach working and a somewhat normal idle by splicing in the crank position sensor wires to the cam position sensor wires. They provide the same signal to the ecm. You'll also have make sure that the 01 map sensor is used. So you'll need to adapt the pigtail from the 99 map to the 01.

You probably already know this but you need to make sure it's the original ecm on the motor and then you'll need to match right pcm on the truck. If it's a manual you're probably ok with these changes. If it's an automatic there's some other things to do so let me know.

Well we just jumpered the crank sensor to the cam sensor and everything seems to work out just fine. Thanks for the help
