I have been smelling fuel, with a flashlight it looks like it's leaking at or near the line going to the injector under the cowl. The very back cylinder (6?) I can't see it leaking but things look shiny wet.

After looking through the Haynes Manual it looks like the torque is only 28#'s. I haven't tried to tighten it yet, it looks like maybe 3/4 or 7/8'' or is it metric?

28#'s wouldn't be much pressure with a wrench. Should I worry about overtightening it?

Are you sure it's diesel?

You may have a small oil leak, or a fuel leak elsewhere. I would not take a wrench to any injector line without a torque wrench. JMO.

Clean the area with some brake cleaner on a cold engine and see if it comes back. That'll give you a clear direction to look to.

I'm sure it's a diesel leak. No doubt by the smell. I could not imagine getting a torque wrench on the line, maybe with a crows foot or something.

I think I'll run it by the shop that did my head gasket...

Thanks!

Torque the connector tube nut to 30ft/#. If that doesnt work get a new connector tube o ring. It's no big deal, actually easy with a 19MM crows foot.

Torque Wrench

Thank you everyone!!

What size torque wrench do you use? Is a 3/8" drive big enough for most stuff or do I need a 1/2" drive?

3/8", I only use the 1/2" for cylinder heads/lug nuts, etc. You can also try snugging it up with a stubby 3/4"-19mm until it quits leaking.

Just dont go over 30ft/#'s. The connector tube O ring is interference fit and overtightening wont stop the fuel seep. If you replace it make sure to wet the bore and O ring with oil or fuel. This stops the dry O ring from twisting or other damage on insertion.

3/8" is great.

I have replaced 2 LP's because they leaked at the electrical fittings on the bottom. You might check that. When I bought the truck the LP was leaking and I replaced it however it had leaked long enough to really foul up the starter, I had to replace it. Good Luck.

I have changed out multiple sets of injectors and I have not torqued any of the injector lines when putting them back on. Never had one leak and never had to replace an oring. Put a wrench on it and make sure the shop that did your head gasket actually got it tight.

If that does not fix it, the return line coming off the back of the head might be leaking. My Dad had one fail last month and it covered the underside of his truck with diesel, I guess it will not rust now.

Clean area where you suspect leak. Then cover with baby powder, you will see exactly where your leak is and how bad it is.
