the stock oil pressure gauge on my 01 has started varying from 40 lbs to as high as 80 lbs at start-up , isn't dropping below 40 at idle, may be running at 1800 rpm showing 80, all at once drops back to 40 and vice-versa, just started this a few days ago. ANY one had this problem,or any suggestions as what I should looking at?

I have that same issue, which I believe is responsible for my current oil leak past the vacuum pump seal. I had the sending unit and guage checked out twice at the dealer and they were OK. Has anyone come across any product to remove sludge ( and free up a sticking oil pressure regulator) from the motor without a complete enginge teardown?

The oil pressure regulator on a 2001 is mounted in the oil filter head. It can be removed without engine disassembly. It was the same in my 1989, so it will be in whatever year you have. You can clean the piston and check the spring. If the bore needs cleaning, you must remove the filter head from the engine to avoid getting debris in the engine. The hex head nut to the front of the oil filter is what you remove.

if it's direct from Cummins, give the engine serial number to Cummins shop and they'll give you the right unit.

This will not work anymore as the part listed is a new style (Ford part) that requires a reflash and turns your oil pressure sender into a dummy light. I would go read the thread that Kat linked too.

Here is the part# you want to ask for at Cummins: #4088390NX

It was given to me by a member who is also a Cummins Parts Man in California. I have this on my truck and it works great.
