I would appreciate the group's thoughts on my 2001 Dodge 2500 CTD. Here's the story:

About a week ago, I noticed that the engine would stumble when I got to about 1900 rpm or when going around sharp curves. A few days later, it became hard to start when warm.

A mechanic friend suggested I change the fuel filter, in case debris was blocking fuel flow. I changed it and attempted to go through the priming process as outlined at dodgeram.org. I rapidly found that the lift pump was not running: I could not hear it after I bumped the starter and, if I left the drain valve on the filter open, no liquid flowed when the starter was cranked.

I got a replacement lift pump and installed it yesterday. The priming process ended up more involved than I expected: in addition to purging air from the Schader valves on the filter housing and the injector pump, I had to crack three injectors and wait for fuel to come out of them one-by-one. By the time I cranked enough to get fuel to all cylinders, the engine started and sounded normal.

I let it idle for about five minutes, then took a 20 mile drive, about half highway and half city driving. I shut it off for about ten minutes and could not get it started again. I tried on and off for about an hour.

A couple questions I have for the group are 1) is it normal during the cranking process on the '01 for the air bag light and/or check engine to light and chime to sound after 10-15 seconds (the timing is not consistent) and 2) what is the sound that sounds three times after the key is turned to the off (removal) position telling me? The latter sound occasionally happens when I crank the starter for more than 7 seconds or so.

Thanks for any advice and thanks especially for this forum. It has been an invaluable resource for me.

Welcome to the TDR. Hopefully someone can help with your questions soon. My only guess is that the injection pump is bad, but it is only a hunch. I would guess that now you have no fuel to the injectors if you cracked the lines, even though fuel is being supplied to the injection pump. I hope you have a good dealer, cause it sounds to me like it is time to have them come get it... ...

post some stats of your truck year/model/mileage/mods..... is it still under warranty??if so. . i hope that u are not paying for the pump or the work.

It definatly sounds like the injector pump. Its covered under the cummins 5/100,000 warranty. The easiest way is for dodge to read computer fault codes. I believe its 0236-injector pump timing. The material that is used in the concentric that actually pumps the fuel was changed to correct a problem that the vp44 had in all pumps manufacturered after 3/02. If dodge replaces your pump they will use a reman pump that will have this upgrade. Oh there have been 17 pump manufacturer "upgrades" since they first designed the vp44.
