Guys,

My cousin has an 02 2500 4x4 6-speed with 3. 54 gears and 13,000 miles on it. He's wondering what kind of fuel mileage he should be getting running empty since he's seen typically gets about 13. 5 - 15 around town and 14-16 on the highway. I don't much about the 24 valves since I'm a properly valved guy:D :p so any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

I've got the training wheels, but I get the exact same mileage (pretty much 15 all around) as your cousin. I've now got 46,000 miles on it.

P. S. I do a 2000' climb twice a day during my commute.

I've got the same set up as your cousin. I get around 16-18 with the way I drive. Trips less than 10 mi usually, never gets to warm up enough, mostly city driving. On the odd long trip, I'll get 20+ as long as I'm driving on a relatively level road at or just above the speed limit. I really saw my mpg drop at around 10K mi, then I replaced the fuel filter and it's been fine since. 14k now, not even close to being broke in.

'01 2500, Quad Cab, HO 6 speed, 3. 54.

I get 18 - 21mpg. Winterized fuel 18-19mpg. Non-winterized fuel 19-21mpg.

Max mpg (and Min. fun): Short-shift (get to 6th as soon as possible). I'm in 6th by 35 mph. Keep your foot out of it, don't speed & use cruise control on freeway. --Yes, it's BORING, but at $1. 89/gal, I can't afford to have fun.

I have a 2001 Quad cab 4 x 4 6 spd HO 410's and i get about the 16 range all around if you drive fast you get a little bit less.

I got 30,000 mls on her(just turned yesterday) what should i be checking to keep her in top shape at this point preventative or other maintenance?

Also looking for some speed tips what can i do to get more out of the truck?

might want to check the fuel filter. Whats the alititude in trinidad? I'm at about 4500ft and have the same pickup. I just rolled over 12100 this morning and get usually about 18 MPG with a nice even highway and town mix. My last tank i got 17. 3 but towed a car about 1/3 of that tank. Considering winter fuel thats not too bad. My mileage has been slowly increasing the past few months. I bought it in august last year with 130 miles on it.

Trinidad is at approximately 6100 ft. After looking at all of your feedback I'm thinking there might be a problem. He changed his fuel filter at 10,000 miles and his oil every 3,000 miles. He drives his truck normal and mostly on the highway. So if there is a problem what do ya'll think he might want to check out.

Thanks again,

Joe

P. S. I think I'm going to need a big box of tissues when I tell him the kind of mileage you guys are getting:D

:) May I ask what your normal driving speed is?? Speed at altittude can kill the mileage. I average anywhere from 17. 9 all the way to 23 depending on where I let my foot fall. Normal around town on the freeway 25 miles to work at 60 will yield right at 21 with summer fuel and 17. 9 to 19. 1 with winter blend. If I slow to 55 my mpg will run 21 to 23 depending on temp and type of fuel. :) I have gotten as hi as 24 mpg on summer fuel. I have 85,000 on my rig.

the mileage numbers that your friend is seeing are about right for a higher altitude driving situation. Add to that driving styles, and it's reasonable to get those numbers.

I usually see about 16 around town, almost 20 on the hwy. Don't mind the lower mileage #s from a 3500 or 4. 10s -- it's apples and oranges. .

Hohn

I think Hohn is right. The numbers could be right on if he has a heavy foot, and well poor driving habits. I catch people doing stupid things everyday that waste fuel. Little things like speeding up to a red light, waiting till your on the hill to start speeding up, flooring it to get to the speed limit. I noticed when i started easing off it, (i was trying to speed the break in) That my mileage really started jumping up. ) These engines can be tempermental, they'll go for ya, but take some fuel doing it. But then again, if you watch yourself these engines can really perform well economically.

Perhaps there might be a problem. Fuel pressures are important, he may have a bad filter. It only takes one bad batch of diesel to kill a good filter. A filter might last you 20-30K miles, as long as good clean diesel is used it'll hold up. I always buy reputeable diesel from stations that do lots of business. Keep us posted incase this problem arises elsewhere with someone else's pickup.

6100 is pretty high, but i do travel to the mountains here regularly which takes me up to 7-8k and don't see numbers that low. good luck breaking the news to him!

one other thing, it may just not be broken in yet. I did some towing with mine and drove it hard early on. If he has yet to load it much, breaking in can take 20k miles.

I have the 02 HO 6spd with 3:54 gears & 16K miles. Ijust made a trip from Co. Springs to Tonopah, Nv & got right at 18 mpg both ways.

I have a 2002 2500 w/3. 55, with 6 speed I keep my foot in it. I have been getting 16. 4 mpg and in the warm weatherI get 17 or better. Pulling my trailer I get around 13mpg.

Normal driving speed is usually 75-80 and he does have a slight heavy foot. To me the his fuel mileage seems a little low and he's going read this forum tonight and probably is gonna cry especially since I filled up and calculated my fuel mileage to be 21. 3:D on winter fuel. Oh well I hope he gets this issue resolved if their is really a problem. I guess he could always trade in his truck and get a 12 valve:D ;) j/k
