Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 02 5.9 timing gear box GASKET

I just got nailed $3600 for replacement of the gasket around the timing gear box... . I was told that the labor was 22 hours and that the engine had to be removed to reach the gasket... . I was astounded to hear that something as basic as a gasket would require that kind of work and, mainly, that ANY manufacturer would make it that way. I checked with a friend at Ford and he said the same was true for those diesels, too. What's up with that?? Anybody else had this problem?? I cannot believe, also, that when I called Cummins about it I was not even given a return call or email. I have only 66K miles on the engine and my warranty expired on 3/31, so I thought Cummins might, at least, go half-way with me. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The timing gear case is located on the front of the engine and in order to remove it you must pull the cam. This requires disassembly of the valve train so you can lift the tappets from the top as well as removal of the front bumper, AC condenser, aftercooler, and radiator so you have room to slip the cam out the front.

The engine does not have to be removed from the truck and a competent mechanic can do the job in 6-8 hours. Sounds like you took your truck to the wrong place.

Thanks for info... . I was stuck in Tucson getting it fixed at Tucson Dodge, so I will challenge their work based on this... . I also will try to go back to Cummins... . thanks again.

I forgot to add the injector pump and power steering/vacuum pump mount to this case as well and must also be removed. Regardless, 22 hours is ridiculous.
