My Rig

A friend of mine just bought an 02 duramax dually and a 37 foot Montana 5'r. I havent seen his new rig yet. Dont know if its 4x4 or 4x2. What should I tell him to look out for on the 02 duramax ?

Besides the injector problems they had overheating problems as well. With a 37 ft Montana he will learn soon if his is affected. I doubt he will be passing very many Cummins, so he will be looking at their rear view mirrors. After his first trip down a steep hill ask him if that engine braking feature of the Allison is working for him:-laf

Since the truck was previously owned by an RVer, perhaps a fulltime RVer, it probably is not a real high mileage truck but the GMs with lots of miles on the odometers are usually completely worn out. I rode in a couple of them owned by fellow RV transporters several years ago. Everything in the trucks was worn out by 300k miles.

If he is a true friend, then I would congratulate him on his purchase and let him tell you about his troubles when they are sure to happen. That way you won't lose a friend when you say I told you so. It is a big purchase for him, and he will be proud of it, even though it is the wrong truck. You don't see the first generation of DMAX's on the road for a reason. :)

Thanks for the feedback. No, Im not going to give him an "I told you so". Just wanted to give him an educated guess on what to look our for so he doesn't have any surprises.

I'm looking forward to seeing exactly what the rig looks like. He does drive a truck (locally) for a living. So, he does have some experience in what to look for.

Being from Flint, MI where we build the Silverado and medium duty trucks, I see a lot of Duramax trucks around. Most are retiree grocery getters and few are used for heavy towing. As you would expect I have not heard anyone complain about their Duramax but I can ask a mechanic buddy of mine about them. I love the exposed frame rails on the Chevys and GMC's... . NOT! I cannot afford one of them either, Dodge trucks are $10k cheaper than the locally built stuff???? Not sure why.
