My neighborhood mechanic is rebuilding a 140,000 mile engine that has 3 scored pistons & cylinder walls. They are boring it out 40 thousandths. Rebuilt turbo & many new parts.

The engine had an Edge EZ on it. Fram oil filter, also.

What would cause the scoring of the cylinder walls? Would the EZ have anything to do with it? Fram filter?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

FRAM is probably and would be the best guess. They are considered a junk filter and I do not know of anybody that uses them. Fleetguard + 2 Amsoil 110's + Spinner II is what I use. These engines are way too expensive to be rebuilding at 140,000 and to trusting them with a FRAM filter.

Mundgyver,

The first thing I saw when they pulled the engine was that orange Fram filter. I told him to not replace it with a new Fram.

The truck owner did not keep the engine compartment very clean. Old dried-up motor oil is thick on some parts.

I was wondering if the EZ could have caused any damage. I have no idea what setting it's set on. Probably the highest.

How does the EZ work on these engines. Does it use pressure, timing or both, or something else?

Thanks.

If it is an original EZ, it will use timing. If it is a Edge-Comp it will use timing and Fuel if the wire is tapped, other wise just timing. Sounds like the truck was not well carred for if it had oil on it. :( The owner problably put the edge on it and then just abused the engine. 40th over is alot and if the piston wall were scored then my bet is the truck got abused alot and no maintenance. :( Speculation on my part, but a dirty engine compartment tell me a great deal. Most people doing their own maintenance will keep the engine compartment clean and like to show it off. To bad, these engines are designed to 400,000 between rebuilds and there alot of them that have 500,000+ on them.
