I just talked to my grandpa and his 02 is broke down. He said he was pulling over to check the trailer/jeep and all and at about 10mph, the truck died. He has fuel pressure gauges and such, and said his lift pump pressure is within spec. He said he went through the routine of purging the air from the system and it still wont start. It just cranks. He called the dealer and they said the diesel tech was off today, so they couldnt help out. the wrecker company said the truck is to tall (it has an 11. 5' lance camper on it) and long to haul, so they want to flat tow it. We suspect air gettin in the lines? Maybe a failed VP44? any suggestions?

Is he a Good Sam member???? Just for situations like this its worth the extra $$$ per year to know if you need a tow. . they can handle it. .

Is his fuel pressure gauge pre filter or post filter? If it is pre filter his reading could be good but have a clogged filter.

I'll ask him where the gauge is located... I believe he just replaced the filter last weekend.

the truck has 25,000 miles on it, I believe the dealer will pay towing?

I guess he could have got a bad tank of gas too, and plugged the filter?

thanks for the quick responses guys! Im going out to help now, Ill check the filter first.

Thanks again!!

Since he purged the system I assume that there is fuel to the engine right? It could be a bad sensor such as camshaft or crankshaft position or another vital sensor. Maybe someone can reply with the process for displaying codes. With my 95 it is key on, off, on, off, on, then write down how many times the check engine light flashes. It will flash once or twice ect. , pause, then flash some more. The trouble codes should all be two digit codes separated by a pause for each digit, then for each code. I am thinking that either a 12 or 21 is a all clear code as in there arent any loged problems, but not for sure. Perhaps someone with more knowledge in this area will reply and confirm or correct me. Hope this helps, Jordan

Have you checked all the connections especially on the ecm and vp 44 pump conection? also the battery cables for maximum voltage? just a thought!

Mine did the same thing this past summer. It just died with no other symptoms befor hand. She would crank but gave no indication of even trying to start. I had it towed to the dealer.

It was the crankshaft position sensor.

I don't know if any other conditions could produce the same problem.

thanks for all the help!

Thanks for the help guys.

Turns out, the gas station where he got his fuel at had about 6 other trucks come bak after discovering that their pumps were pumping gasoline. not sure how this could happen, but that was the problem. The station did agree to cover the costs.

thanks again for the help.
