Ok I got rid of my 96 and am in possession of a brand new 02 4x4 quad cab 2500 HO. I have 1300 miles on it. I have noticed something different about it. While idling while I am outside of the truck I hear a high pitched whining sound. it is hard to pinpoint where it is coming from as I can hear it from all around the exterior.

My question is -is this the infamous electric lift pump that whines like that? Please advise. If not Ill need to scoot down to the dealership for some warranty work b4 the bombing begins.

Thanks in advance

I have a whining sound with my '01 HO that bothers me, but I wouldn't describe it "high pitched", certainly not like the turbo whine or a squeaking metal tone. It's a medium pitched "wooowooowooo" noise that is very hard to localize and is most apparent at idle and near idle. It rises and falls in pitch with engine RPM and sort of sounds like belt/blower whine on a supercharged gasser.

By buddy's HO has the same tone in the engine if I listen really carefully, but not noticeable like my truck. I'm going to Cummins to have them listen to it because I'm sure DC won't be able to hear it.
