I have an 02 with 15,000 mi that has developed a noise within the dash. It sounds like its from inside, left side, middle. It sounds like a slight clirp/ eek almost a metallic ding da ding that is consistent with the vibration of the truck. I have pushed pulled held done everything and can not find. I have even taken off the panel below the sterring colom and felt around while driving. I have zip tied loose stuff under the dash and slammed the door on a towel at the hinges. I have checked under the hood and driven with the mirror folded in and the door open. I was told at the dealer that the shift rod for the AT transmission needed to be lubed. done still have noise. I can not make the noise while truck is parked. happens in neutral while coasting.

PLEASE help if you have had simmiliar situation

A long shot...

A buddy of mine had this really irritating noise in his truck... depending where you sat in the truck made a difference where you thought the noise was coming from. Maddening.

I found it for him though.

If you have a quad cab, check the plastic vents on the rear doors they might be loose or poor fitting.

I removed his we went for a drive... no more noise.

Reinstalled them with a dab of silicone to hold steady... still no noise.

In the winter it was like a squeek/rub/metallic sound.

In the summer was more like a rattle of a loose part in the dash.

Hope this helps.

It sounds silly but I have found two things. 1: Take all your keys off the key ring and use only the ignition key in the cyl ... take it for a rip. (The cummins made a resonance that vibrated my keys at certain rpm's that drove me nutz!)

Seccond is the shifter linkage. There's a white nylon pass thru grommet that is close to the transmission itself. The rod that passes thru was no punn squeaky clean. I greased it up and viola! No irritating squeak that sounded like it was under the dash!

cant find

I tried just the key only, lubed all the door and hood hinges and the deeeaaler lubed the "rod" near the transmission. It noise sounds like its coming from inside the dash between the head light knob and park brake petal. I even coasted in neutral with motor off!! I removed the panel below the colum and reached through the dash and pulled, held ect everthing i could reach, still noise. This one is going to drive me nuts. I had a 72 chey that did not do this. Its getting dropped off at the dealer tomarrow, they said they have sensors that will find it. yeah right

oh sure a dodge dealer mind you not mercedees or jaguar dealer have sensors that can pinpoint an impossible squeak ..... but they can't figure out diff fluid or even fuel pressure

Good luck with it and do not let them Bull you at all!

BTW did you also check the fuse BLOCK mounts and Hood Latch cable?

It's not the steering column is it? There is a rubber coupling just beyond the firewall in the engine compartment. This coupling is made of various pieces one being a plastic ring that surrounds the shaft. If this ring rubs on the shaft just right then you'll get a squeek. Try some lube.

I don't want to hear any wise remarks about rubbing shafts and lube.

I had a rattle that drove me nuts for a while. I could not find it so I took it to the dealer while it was still in warranty. It was something in the emergency brake assembly that had broke and I believe they had to put a asembly on.

dealer said

Well I left my truck at the deeeaaaler and hoped for the best. I got a call, "wow we spent 4 1/2 hours but we got her, its all done". I showed up and got told by the sweeper boy "yeah he had the whole dash out and all the guages and even those extra one by the wind shield". Of course I m thinking why, the sqweek was clearly coming from down low. Then the service mgr tells me yeah he test drove it its gone, we found a TSB about pinch welds b low the a piller and did that, the noise is gone". So I signed the papers and went to the truck. I inspected it thouroughly, looked good no scuff marks on my perfect door sills no grease in the seats ect, well then I try my little switch that I put in that activates my reverse lights. doesnt work. I fix it in 12 seconds and I think "the dumb a--- did nt try this I hope the noise is gone. Well I drive up the road about 4 feet and ITS STILL THERE. so I drove up the road further and did about 80 push ups and went back to the dealer.

We had a discussion about how the moron didnt test drive it- is a liar- someone else is a liar- some one is deaf- ect. The truck is there for the 4 th weekend and who knows how long after. F in stupid morons.

This might sound dumb... but I would take some wooden shims they use to install doors and shove them into every crack I can find on the dash and in between the dash and the pillar. If the noise changes or goes away remove them one at a time until it comes back. Good Luck.

Man what abummer but ain't supprised at the end result  Sensors indeed  what so the deaf one can read the squeak?  sorry I just share your frustration being I was in the biz and saw that crap every day and got fed up.

I was thinkin' and it may be a long shot... ... . Your 4X4 shift lever ..... wiggle that arround a bit and see if it makes the noise (Boot as well) .

BTW Hey Kevin long time no see from. Good Point with the shims as they wouldn't leave any scuff marks and can apply a fair amount of force ... . I like that.

My squeak is coming from the steering column I don't know from what but if I hold down slightly on the gear shifter it goes away! I have lubed everything that I could find but its still there! Anybody know what else to check?

You are describing the noise in mine.

I have noticed that it only does it with the rotating pressure on the steering wheel.

Some times I just roll the window down and then I can't hear it.

Anyway it must be in the shaft itself.

I have had a similar squeak/rattle whatever... it is the emergency brake assembly. I have not gotten off my butt to look at it to find the exact cause because when it starts the noise, I just reach down with my left hand and barely push the pedal down and the noise goes away. Me thinks there might s'posed to be some kind of stop/limiter to keep the pedal down just a hair farther... but like I said, I haven't gotten off my butt to investigate it yet... and it AIN'T going to the dealer.

FIXED

Well this morning I got the " your truck is done" call at 10:30. I arrived at the dealer and was told that a senior mechanic got it this time. The noise was from a pinch weld in the body that was accessed from under the hood. It is some where dowm low under the master cylinder. The guy fixed it in 20 minutes. No noise now.

I guess not having my truck all the holiday weekend, having to unload alot of stuff, and haul 2 kids and my girlfriend in the 1 ton to go to the lake was just a small inconvienience. yeah right. anyway if you have what I described there is a TSB on pinchwelds ect that cause this noise.

SWEET! Lets Party!!!!!!! :D

Wow good deal! I must admit I was major skeptical about them finding it and having to take matters into your own garage. Niice! So what did they do to such said weld?

32 dollar snap on punch

Well I was told that a punch and a hammer did the trick. I am going to crawl under and see what they did.
