Question for you guys out there, I have been fighting an issue with my truck since I got it going about a month ago. The issue is that my truck constantly smokes all the time except at a idle. With no power adders at all, this thing always has a black haze going down the road. I have check many things and talked with a few people, and most people that have injectors in a 05 have been happy with them.

Well just tonight I was going thru my invoice from Scheid Diesel where I have had all my motor work done, including injectors and turbo. Well on my invoice for the injectors it says: DODGE 80hp INJ 03-04

So my question is: is this my issue with the black smoke? I know that the 03-04 trucks only have two injection events and the 04. 5 and up trucks have three injection events. So do I have a set of injectors set for 03-04 and causing an over fueling condition for my 05?

Just wanting some feed back on what your guys thoughts are on this?

Thanks for you advice!!

Dustin

The main difference between the injector design is the number of holes in the tip and the spray angle. The number of injections are controlled by the ECM. The 03-04 injectors can be ran in an 04. 5 and up engine, but the spray angle is not correct and that is possibly what is causing your problem. As for the 04. 5 and up injector, do not even try to run them in an 03-04 engine. ;) the fuel will spray on the crown of the piston and not in the bowl.

That is true that the injectors are the problem, the injectors should be changed out sooner than later to avoid any possible problems. They should stay with model year or CPL of the engine. Thanks, Brady

Thanks guys, I appreciate your replys! I actually have the injectors out already because I was sure that I had a problem with them. Thats when I t noticed that is said my injectors were for an 03-04 on my invoice. So I will be calling Scheid in the morning to see whats up. It will be interresting to see what they want to do!

Thanks

I'm sure I read,...

Recently on one of the forums I've read that it was discovered that the optimum number of holes is 5 for 3rd gen trucks. I obviously could be wrong about this but as I recall some member said something like what I indicated above and I think it was one of our most reviered manufacturers of injectors who has made this discovery and yes it was for 03-06,... as far as using the 5 holes.

Ok,. . go ahead and flame me, but I'm pretty certain that is what I read.

I ran some 05 injectors in my 03 for a while. It ran bad and smoked profusely. The 05 seemed to run OK with the 03 injectors in it, but I only drove it around the yard. I would think you would have less trouble with 03 injectors in an 05 than 05 injectors in an 03.

Yes and NO

I'd really like to hear someone like Don M jump in here. Perhaps 5 hole is the optimum for 03-06 but maybe the angles will be different on 03-04 than 04. 5-06. That possibly is the difference.

If you just want to mod the stock tips then probably an extrude hone will do it. But I'd be curious how many holes a Don M tip has for the 03-04.

Snoxracer, as mentioned above, the 04. 5+ (600/610) engines run a 5-hole nozzle. If you had 03-04 (555) nozzles, they should have an 8 hole nozzle.

I wish that I would of looked at my injectors closer before I sent them back to Scheid Diesel. I remember when I tore my motor down, you could see the spray pattern in the bowl of the piston. They were diffidently 5 hole nozzles! But I didn't look at them close enough this time before I sent them back. But for some reason I was thinking that when I looked at them before I sent them back, they had more then 5 holes.

Thanks again for the replys!

lmills, I'm pretty sure that it was your truck that was in Diesel world, that thing is pretty awesome that you have that much power under the hood. How is the dirveablity of it, some guys that I have talked with said that once you get that much power out of a 04. 5 and up the driveablity isn't good. Just wondering? Thanks

yes, that was my truck at a local event. I have only had one issue so far. I popped a head gasket at 40K. The truck currently has 58K on it. As for drivability I was daily driving it with the Smarty on level 9 until a few days ago. :D

I may have to break out the tascos and see whats going on over on your side of the river. . . . Lloyd

It is likely that the injectors were extrude honed to add power. Extrude honing is an art form, in terms of technique and choice of media. I have seen a lot of poorly honed injectors that smoked terribly, slobbered, and didn't make the kind of power they were supposed to. In contrast, my Stage 2 injectors from Diesel Dynamics performed perfectly.

I ask Scheid what and who they have do the injectors and I can't seem to get an answer. One guy told me that they do them and another said they have a guy do them for them.

I tried to run these for almost a month and they pretty much suck! The truck has no low end power, smokes constantly, even when I pull it in and out of my shop, it has made the floor in my shop black.

Well I will have to see what they say is up with them, thanks for the replys.
