On several occaisions now, I've had the rear of my 03 4x4 LB QC 48re kick out to the right. We're talking on straight aways or very slight curves - nothing sharp at all. This has happened on rough dry pavement, in the snow and also on a wet road. The snow was the worst - I was in 4WD doing about 50 on the highway (I know, too fast right?) and other cars were around me - I was bearly able to recover!

Anyway, I don't think I'm imagining this. Does this sound like a spring has shifted or a shock problem? Would it show up if I have an 4 wheel alignment done? The truck has the stock AT BFG's and they've been rotated. Currently at 21k miles and running 60-65 in the rear tires - otherwise she seems to ride fine. Thanks for any suggestions.

Joe,

60-65 lbs why????????????? unless you are running max GVW you don't need anywhere near that preassure. I would recommend about 40 in the front and 38 in the rear and enjoy a less punnishing ride and only margionally less fuel milage. Not to mention better traction and more forgiving handling( larger more compliant tire contact patch). Give it a try and report back

Best regards

DD

When I tried my tires up at 60 lb in the rear I found the truck was WAY too squirly. Now I run 50 lb and it's much better. I agree with Dan... lower your tire pressure first and see if that helps.

Agreed, the ride is punishing! I used to run 55 front and 45 rear in my 94 Cummins std cab, but this truck is heavier and I'm trying to make the tires last. At 40 in the front, the sidewalls are popping out from the weight of the Cummins. Also, I don't think BFG or Dodge will warranty any tire problems running below recommended pressures. Even if it is the tires - why would the rear always come around to the right? Bouncing is one thing but fishtailing when you're foot is off the gas is not a good thing. Anyone know if a 4wd alighment will show if a spring is shifted? Maybe it's a bad shock?

I run 60 lb up front, and 50 out back for now.

The symptoms you describe are odd. Have you checked to see if the right side rear brake (parking or service) is hanging up?

-Ryan

No, but it has happened with no brake, no gas. To me it seems like some frame or axle geometry issue. I've lowered the tire pressure - we'll see how things go.
