I just traded my '95 v10 for a 2003 cummins with 52000 miles on it. When I first got it I didn't notice anything wrong with it. The next week I noticed that if I reved it up it would tick all the way down to idle. I can also hear it going down the road at 55-60 mph. I brought the truck in to where I got it from and they adjusted the valves. That did not fix it. It still ticks, but now the fuel gauge will go down and up whenever it feels like it. I have the correct oil and oil filter too. the ticking is more noticable when warm.

After idling for a while it will idle up to 1000 rpms. Is it suppose to?

Any help would be appreciated.

ticking

Don't know about the ticking but the idle is supposed to go up to 1000 rpm if the engine is not at operating temp & you have set the park brake

Mine ticks like that and has from the day I got it. I've listened to others and they do the same. I'm assuming it's the injector pump. I will say that I don't notice it at highway speeds though.

I think people are posting about two different kinds of ticking noises.

Mine makes a light ticking sound on occasion. It's definitely the injection system, nothing to worry about.

Others are make a ticking sound that I think is deeper and louder which is the piston tapping problem TSi is referring to and is probably more of a concern. If you hear it going down the road and it's quite audible while laying under your truck that's probably what it is :(

I have a new 2004 HO and I dont hear it. . Just went out and started it up... Nope. . No tick. . Im just ticked off i didnt wait 2 more months and get the new 600. . 20 more hp. . I wonder if you will feel the diff with all the extra smog stuff. . Hmmmmm

GeezzI love my new truck!:D :D Oo.

I agree 100% with Vaughn... I believe he and I have the same tick which is the injection system. Others might have a far more serious, deeper tick (perhaps that could be heard at highway speeds). If you can hear it on the highway, then that's one loud tick!
