My daughter has a 03 Durango. The issue is that twice now the switch locked up. It will not turn at all. If I play with it it will eventually turn and all is well. I have to put the key in and out over and over to get it to go. Then seem good for a while. I have lubed it and it still does it. Wondering if I should change the switch or the entire switch assembly? Has anyone else had this problem? Warranty is gone so I am her warranty now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this will help or not but sometimes on my 02 if the steering wheel gets in a bind I can not turn on my ignition. I move the steering wheel back & forth a little & it will work. I do not know if this is your problem but just a thought.

I think the first thing I would do is get your spare key if you have one. The key might just be worn and not engaging the cylinder properly.

I,ve done the steering wheel shake and it makes no difference. We also tried the second key and no go. Played some more and discovered the dinger rings with no key in it and no lights on when the door is open??? Also discovered that if I hit the key after it is installed completely it will turn and fire up. Take it out and nine out of ten tries it needs to be hit again to turn over and run. It acts a lot like it is not going in all the way but I know it is. Just wondering if I should change the Ignition switch or change the complete ignition switch assembly?? Checked in a Chiltons and I guess I have two choices? Any suggestions or opinions?

Try wiping bearing grease on the pin surfaces of the key, then wipe it all off. There should be just enough grease left to help it slide that last 1/2 mm.

Take the column apart and remove/disassemble the switch unit. (But don't open the pins; that would be an ugly mess. ) You might find something that needs a spot of grease. At least with it opened up you should be able to see most of the mechanisms, especially the ones that operate interlocks.

There is a recall on some of the Durangos. Mine is a 2002 but it may cover 2003 also. Recall number is G28 Gear shift lever blocker. I am not sure if this would cover your problem. It may help though.
