I'm a new member and also a Dodge/Cummins fan. I currently own a Y2K 2500 SB 4X4 3. 55 4 sp auto transmission. I am looking for an '03, 2500, SB, 4X4 with the STD Cummins, 4 sp auto and 3. 73

Yesterday, I tried a '03 3500 H. O. SB Single rear Wheel 4X4, 4. 10, with the 6 speed manual trans.

We all know that noise level is now very low at idle but I was surprised to see that the noise level (at 60mph) was a little higher than my '00 (?)

Of course, RPM was much higher in the '03 (about 360RPM higher than my '00) because of the 4. 10 and transmission top gear.

Will the '03 STD Cummins with 3. 73 and auto transmission be quiter?

Dealer is supposed to call me as soon as he gets one...

One thing is sure: lots of power!

dlessard, just a guess here but I think due to the quieter engine Dodge cut down on the sound insulation. Under load the engine will make more noise than at idle thus it will sound louder.

I believe that the pilot/split shot injection(whatever Cummins calls it) shuts off above a certain RPM thus the diesel clatter returns. This pilot injection is one reason the new engine is quieter than the old at idle.

I test drove a 2003 and noticed that my 2002 seems almost just as quite on the road as the 2003. That would explain why. What rpm does the pilot injection shut down.

Thanks to the TDR I would have never known that. Do you think the dealers know this kind of info.

dealers

Are you kidding? Dealers are there to 'move units. ' They wouldn't know there were diesels out on the lot if customers didn't keep asking for them. Haven't met any that really know the product. I'm sure there are a few.
