I was wondering if the 03's have a different fuel pump than the 24V second generations. I have been reading that those VP-44 pumps aren't that great. Also, I am a new addition to the diesel population so you will see a lot of posts from me, I hope you guys dont get sick of answering them.

Yes the high pressure pump is diffrent. The VP-44 not only generated the high pressure for injection but also timed and metered the fuel. The new high pressure common rail the high pressure pump only builds the pressure. The fuel goes from the high pressure pump a fuel rail that all the injectors are connected to. The injectors are electric solenoids like what a fuel injected gas engine uses but the pressure suppling the injector is much greater up to 23,500psi and the power to open the injector is much greater around 90 volts. The lift pump another big problem with 24 valvers is diffrent at least externally on the new engine and is now mounted right on the fuel filter houseing.

Thanks for the response guys. Once I read your answers I realized how stupid I am. I did know they changed the injection system for 03' so if I engaged my brain before typing I would have answered my own question.
