my 03 starts hesitating at hwy speed after several hours of driving, engine starts to knock extremely hard and keeps getting worse the farther I drive. pull over let it cool down its ok for a while longer. Code says fuel rail sensor circuit high. Sit overnight truck is ok in the AM and check engine light goes out. I paid the Dodge garage $150 and told me it a common problem and they cant fix it. Chrysler has the replacement fuel rail sensors as a restricted part and will not sell it. They said people are replacing these and it is not fixing the problem. I cant drive my truck over 400 miles without this problem and in barely making it home.

Welcome to TDR,

Why did you pay them anything? Isn't that under your warranty or are you over 100,000 miles?

Do you have any aftermarket power enhancements?

Fuel rail sensor not covered under 100k warranty, only parts "under oil," meaning pistons, rings, ect, I think.

What codes does your truck throw, and why does dodge say it doesn't fix problem? I am throwing a P0193 code for fuel rail sensor curcuit high voltage. Welcome to the forum and I hope we can help you out!

it is throwing po193 code when it starts hesitating and bunny hoppin' down the interstate. the following day I start it and it is fine. light will stay on and hold code for a few days then go away, if I then unplug the fuel rail sensor it will then duplicate the loud knock and hesitation and throw the code again. so i would say it is the sensor that is defective or dodge is trying to hide the fact that the sensors are defective. I use this truck to haul cars and right now its hurting my business. The dealer says that they can get me a new fuel rail sensor since chrysler has a hold on them and says the new sensor will not fix the problem I have to pay for it. the sensor is $300 (not covered under warranty) I bought this truck to replace my 96 and I would give anything to get that one back. I think you guys are my last chance before I trade it in on a small Freightliner. I was hoping since dodge said this is a common problem a few of you would have a solution. ThaNKS. STeve

I would be interested to know the voltage on the center wire of the transducer when the fault happens.

Unplugging the sensor should result in a "low voltage" code and not the same high voltage code you get.

You may have to trace out that center wire from transducer to the ECM and make sure it is not shorted to voltage somewhere.

What about power enhancements?? I could see a box/chip and or downloader do this.

Where would the chip be located? I am not much of a diesel mechanic. did not have to be until this. the previous owner installed a staight pipe and a cold air intake. I was wondering what else they might have done to it. Maybe this is the reason they traded it in after a year. What exactly should I be looking for?

So then they may have installed a power enhancing devise that could be your trouble. If its a download then its simply software in the vehicles computer. Might want to call the previous owner on that to find out.

If its an external devise, they usually plug into the rail pressure sensor and mount over on the under-hood fuse box.

This brings up an interesting point- if you buy used and it had a download, how do you flash back to stock with out the devise that did the download?
