Attention: TDR Forum Junkies I have a weird one that I need the TDR expertise to understand/solve:
I have a 2003 48RE with an OD on/off button on the end of the stalk.
I recently discovered how much better our '02 Durango performs with the OD on/off button in the off position when speeds are less than 45 mph. I actually increased my fuel economy by 1+ mpg due to constantly keeping the OD off in city traffic. The TCC seems to lock up in 2nd and 3rd gears and I have "more power". Its slightly annoying to keep pushing the button, but the fuel economy improvement and perceived power increase down low due to the lockup make it hard to stop doing...
I don't use the '03 CTD as a daily driver. I only use it to tow, so I don't have alot of experience with it bobtail in city traffic. I recently used it to run some errands and tried using the OD off in city traffic and all it would do is keep 4th gear from engaging. The TCC would not lock up, the engine revs just continued to climb in 3rd gear w/o any lockup. The truck seems to perform better in city traffic with the OD button on.
I checked the service manuals for both vehicles and they both say the TCC should lock up in the lower gears with the OD off.
I run Smarty on SW1. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? I haven't tried putting it back to stock yet, but thats my only theory for why its not working. Maybe something to do with Smarty working with all 03-07 trucks and tow/haul + OD on/off even though I don't have tow/haul??
Anybody have any feedback on their '03 trucks??
BTW - I have 18,500 miles on the truck and the trans fluid (ATF+4) is brand new and has never been abused.
