04 Turbo Question...

Boost pressure way down???

I just installed a Grand Rocks stack setup today. I used my mbrp 30" muffler in the mix, and went with 6" turnouts. It sounds mean, but there is a TERRIBLE DRONE now :{ I orginally had the cool duals setup, and had no drone at all, even under a heavy load it wasn't bad. Why all of a sudden do I now have such a terrible drone? I can't even drive w/ the windows down it's that loud. Could it be because I have a regular cab and the stacks are now right behind me instead of out the back? This will not last long if I can't figure out how to quiet it down. I would like the sound to decrease atleast 50% or more. Would adding a resinator in the mix help out? Any suggestions on other mufflers or resinators I could add to help me out would be appreciated. I love my stacks, but if I knew the sound would be this bad, I wouldn't have done it. Help is needed!

Chris

part of the drone is from the proximity to your head, the fact that the bed now resonates with the exhaust, and the 6" stacks(the bigger they are the louder they are). Mine is pretty loud (5" Straight piped to 5" turnout stacks)and I am thinking about Dynamatting the back wall of the cab. how high above the cab are the stacks? they will be slightly quieter the taller they are.

take the muffler off... I bet the resonance is about the same, maybe slightly better... SLIGHTLY...

I've been down this road before... it involved a LOT of sound deadener inside the cab, and it was still too loud in a single cab...

the box crossover resonated less than the y-pipe stacks, but adding mufflers ALWAYS made the resonance WORSE than straight piped stacks

Would it hurt anything to put my stock muffler back on? I really don't want to, but this sound is killing my ears and give me a headache  I love the MBRP sound I had before and I want it back.

Scrappy: I thought about dynamatting the back part of the cab as well. The stacks sit about 5" above the cab. Can't make them any higher.

I'm thinking about ordering either an MBRP resinator or the aeroturbine muffler. Not sure yet. My buddy who we are going to install his stacks this weekend on his '02 CTD, has the 5" turnouts w/ internal mufflers. I'm thinking about trying his 5" w/ internals on mine to see if that will make a difference before I buy another muffler. What do ya'll think?

had 6" on my 04. 5 tried everything to get rid of the drone to no avail, mufflers, no mufflers rubber mounts nothing helped so they came off and resided on my 94 with no muffler and it didnt drone at all, so that led me to believe that it is a third gen issue and as far as my experience unable to get rid of.

I've been down this road... tried six different muffler/resonator combos, different style stacks, etc. on my 97 single cab.

the stack combo that was least painful was straight piped curved tops, even with the cab, box crossover, and LOTS of sound deadener in the cab, including on the celing of the cab.

it was still too much on the highway. an auto would have been fine because it would have kept the revs down

Forrest: I do have an auto and it still sucks. I'm going to try the internal mufflers and if that doesn't work, then the stock muffler is going back on. I have no other choice. I'm tired of spending $$$ on different exhaust setups. I love the look of stacks and if they are quiet, then so be it. If there is anyone else out there with a 3rd gen. single cab truck w/ stacks and has a nice setup with no drone, please let me know what you did.

Tonight I think I found one of my solutions with the drone problem. My friend (TDR member also) who I mentioned earlier had the 5" turnouts w/ internal mufflers let me switch my 6" for his setup and what a major difference it has already made. I'm going to send back my 6" and order another 5" w/ internals for my friend. The drone has almost completly gone away just by switching things around. I'm going to add an mbrp 18" resinator as well so I think it will be at a level I will enjoy. I'll keep everyone informed of the final product.

Someone on this board posted that line-x in the bed greatly reduced his drone. I don't think he had stacks, but lining the bed might help a bit if it's already not. You've got a big empty metal cavity there to quiet down. Seems like it might act as a drum.

Anyone that has the drone problem also have their bed line-x'ed?
