Has anyone in TDR land traded their 03 in and gotten a fair price for it?

I have spoken to a dealer in my area and they are telling me the best they can do is $4,500 UNDER bluebook trade in value! The person who told me this is saying it is because of the great deals they are giving on the new trucks.

I can't argue because I did pay invoice minus rebates for the 03.

These prices do get the new ones down allot closer to what a used one would have to sell for when you add in the savings of new vehicle interest rate financing.

The condition of this truck is perfect if you doubt it just look at my gallery pics.

In case you were wondering why I want to let her go it's to get a six speed and an E-Brake.

Anyone have any useful input?

Thanks

Your best option would be to sell it out right yourself instead of doing a trade in, but that does sound easier said than done at times. My last two vehicles were trade in's an of course I did'nt get what I really wanted for them. I guess it's just the luck of the draw how the market is going on used vehicles at the time your wanting to trade up. There again if you advertise yourself with the options you have listed an can show good maintenance records it may just be what one certain person is looking for at the time an you'll come out money ahead. Good luck either way you choose. :D

If it's been a good truck. there are a lot of people looking for a really good used vehicle. The used car market is the strongest it has been in years. You can do better by selling it yourself and taking the transaction to the dealership for an "In and out" transaction where you get the use of your sales tax.

Good luck. There are a lot of people looking for 03's.

Selling 03

RankRam,

Post it in the classifieds on this site. I posted my 01 and it was gone right away.

I think there are a good # of people looking at them.

Sounds to me like they are just trying to make a killing off the trade. I checked local area pricing on used 03 3500 rams here and they are selling for 35K, that is with 25k miles too, so if the book value is 30k minus 4500 then they would make a nice profit off the vehicle.

I would try a few different dealers to see what you could get.

I am thinking pretty hard about trading mine in for a 05 4x4 with 6speed since they extended the incentives but I would not take less then book value on a trade. Also I am hoping they tune the motor up a bit more on the Hp and TQ.

Car dealers don't go by Kelly BB or NADA whatsoever. It means nothing to them. They have their own system which is web-based and updated daily and a lot more sophisticated. It's called Mannheim.

Last year trying to sell my '01 the KBB trade-in value was listed at close to $19,000 but on Mannheim it was a piddly $14,100.

Don't know what to say to ya', I was at two dealers this weekend and had a firm 28k offered for mine(03/2500/4x4/48re/swb/slt/27k miles) that is what kbb said it should be ! Even had one dealer do it in front of me and had to aadvise him to not select the SO engine. (he was gonna too)

Thanks for the info everyone!

R. M. THOMPSON I also have the employees discount and this is the only way I would consider letting this truck go.

I can't complain about the truck as far as the way it runs. It does what it was designed to do and does it very well. When I purchased it the 48re was touted as better than the 47re and would be E-Brake approved. Then after further R&D, Nope no E-Brake on this poor little auto. What BS, I just want an E-Brake approved transmission!!!!!!!!

End of rant. Till next time.

bought mine last week for $30k

Last week, I got the same truck in green for $30k. It has 12,000 miles and runs and looks like a brand new truck.

When I traded my '03 hemi 1500 in on my '04 2500 CTD, the best I was offered was $3,000 less than kbb. I tried advertising the '03 extensively at kbb tradein price, not even private party sale price. NO calls at all. With rebates, 0% financing, etc, it's tough to private party sell a late model. Less than savy buyers aren't looking at the actual $$ involved, just the payment. My wife bought a new '03 LIberty for no money down, 0% financing and 60 months and paid invoice less rebates. Essentially free money. The problem with buying this way is there is a period there that the vehicle is worth considerably less than you owe on it.

My father in law bought an '02 Lincoln LS that way. When he passed away in May, mother in law wanted to get rid of the car and the $600 per month payments. She took it back to the dealer they bought it from to sell it back. She had to PAY THEM over $10,000 to take the car. ($17,500 wholesale value vs $27,500 owed on it). Guess I should have offered to buy it, but didn't need or want it.

Typically, you will get low book -20% for a trade in. If the rebates end this may improve, but probably not by much. Never tell a dealer that you have a trade until the deal is negotiated on the new one or you will never really know what you got.

I traded in my 03 HO 48RE SLT back in March and got a new 600 and they gave me 29,500. 00 for it and I even got the new one with a very nice discount. But this was the 3rd vehicle I bought from them, don't know if that had something to do with it.

I also only paid 30500 for the 03 in July when I bought it. I think I did pretty good on the deal. :-{} Oo.

I buy at EP (employee price) so the new vehicle price is the same no matter where I go and is non-negotiable. EP is usually around 5% under invoice. In addition all the rebates apply. The only variant is the value of the trade-in.
