If the new "simpler and more reliable than GM or Ford's" VGT works out well, I wonder if it'll be adaptable to the '03 instead of an exhaust brake? I'm still not convinced that the VGT is the way to go but I've been wrong before... .

Not an HX40, but yes, bigger than stock. 330rwhp seems to be about the useable limit for the stock turbo.

Kieth,

What happens after 330 hp? Drive pressures sky high? Not much more useable HP? I now have an EZ and was thinking of injection next. What would you suggest?

Turbo Upgrades

We have played with a lot of different combinations including the HX-40. Is there something in particular that you were wondering about? We like Twins the best! If you have a particular question feel free to ask!

Kieth,

The only real question is how much power is "useable" while towing 13,000 lbs. I would like to goto DDII's. With stock HP being rated at 235, the EZ adds say 70 HP. Will I be over 330 to 350 with the DDII's.

330hp is the limit with the stock turbo. With the larger turbo we have on our truck now, with Stage 3's (no box) it makes right at 400hp with no smoke and no EGT problems.

The compound setup that Quad has on that 03 does rock guys. I road in that thing several months ago. What is that thing getting to the ground now Quad? Greg if your towing 13,000 pounds I would highly encourage you to find someone with a set of compounds and ride with them towing the same amount of weight. I think the results would shock you. I would also recommend to anyone building a set of compounds to tow with, to have an adjustable wastegate like mine. I can set overall boost pressure, adjust drive pressure ect. ;)

so that leaves 25 hp till we max out the turbo on an HO

(330-305 stock)

???

thats pretty quick

turbo upgrades

Craig,

Long time no see! I see in your signature that your truck is running well! I am not going to give all the hp numbers out with the new setup but it makes a lot of power! The last dyno run we made was with the stock turbo and we were only at 492 on diesel only, but that was in 3rd gear! I think you remember the transmission fiasco? We have put the stock turbo back on the truck to do more drive pressure testing and more dyno work. We are working on testing the exhaust temperature differences with some intake modifications as well as a new 5" system. I think without spending an arm and a leg we can get 400 at the tires and still be able to pull a pretty good load! Hope you come down to see us again soon!

tomeygun,

I don't think that 330hp is the limit on an HO or even an SO for that matter, but we are going to put it on paper. We have several customers with an HO that pull for a living and they are in the 325-350 rwhp range and they pull everyday. Of course they have gauges and exhaust systems. Like I said earlier we are trying to determine exactly where the break is for heavy towing. We are using a SO Auto to do the testing with. If you are interested in the results let me know and I will keep you updated!

I'm real interested in how we come up with 330 hp max? Was that towing or just dyno runs? Fred is running his truck with an EZ, exhaust, and air filter and has no egt problems yet. I think that would put an HO around at least 350. Is boost fitting going to help much? I still haven't installed mine.

hp limit

Greg,

Like I said earlier, I amnot sure why people think that 330hp is the limit? Even that number at the rear tires is so easy to achieve it is unreal! As far as the boost elbow you have, it should definately help. I can't give too much advise because I don't know specifics about the product you are using. I do know that more air should decrease egt's. These new motors are unbelievable and I think people will be shocked to find out what they will really do!

ahh yes,

thought of that as I hit the submit button,

So the HO turbo and the SO turbo is the same, correct?

Just a matter of electronics?

Correct. Turbo's are the same. Our HO made 285hp stock, at the wheels. Towing a 15k trailer, it would get 1200+ stock. At 330hp with just our Stage 1 injectors, it got to about the same point. Stage 2's made the EGT's go over the limits. At Stage 3 with a larger turbo and better air box, we see ~400rwhp that is fully useable towing that 15k# 5er up any hill, with no smoke.
