I understand that January of 04 they will all have EGR on them. I would want an 03. Go to the high volumne dealers like www.meltonsales.com and others and see if they have an 03 that you like in stock. Resale value will be better with an HO with the 48RE auto versus the SO and the 47RE (both are good) If you are running mostly unloaded you will be happy with the SO. I run unloaded 99% of the time and I drive an HO 6 speed  . I suggest you read the 3rd generation threads and you will get a quick education. You can also do searches for specifics. Good luck.

Hey Highrisk, so that you know..... the 47re is no longer made. It was perminatly replaced by the 48re as of Jan 1, 2003. I just purchased an 03 HO/48re an can tell you that this new trans is much better than the 47re stock for stock. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Richard, I know that the only automatic available for the HO is a 48re but I think if you buy the SO you only get the 47re even as of today.

Highrisk, buy an HO 6speed ;)

Highrisk, also check out www.markroberts.com. Pretty good size inventory, $316. 00 below invoice, and a fly in program! Great folks to deal with. I'm doing the break in right now on my HO/48RE, initial impression is very good. Good luck!

Its not set in stone yet if the 04's will have an EGR system or a catilitic convertor. Cummins is trying to keep the costs down with Chrysler and they are not able too with an EGR system.

Highrisk,

I am going to agree with Pit Bull on spending the extra $$ for the HO. I have 03 HO 6spd and by brother had a 03 SO 5spd. He definitely lacked the much needed power to cruise at a constant speed both on the highway and 2 lane. Here in W. PA the hills are the best indicator of cruising speeds. I also was getting 4-6 mpg better mileage. There are some little differences in trucks that I'm sure effected this difference but that is a significant spread @ $1. 72 gallon.

You will get the money out of the HO in fuel savings. (For me it will):D

Sorry guys... but what is an "EGR" system?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It takes a small amount of the exhaust and puts it back in the engine to make it run cleaner. Not sure how it works, but I didn't want it.

it does not run cleaner with the egr system. the egr system "dilutes" the incoming air charge to make it burn cooler [less oxygen due to egr gasses displacing oxygen]

egr has no place on a modern engine. the egr system is f'n mickey mouse i think...
