hi i have a 03 3500 2wd cummins 178,000 all stock. starts fine runs & drives fine lots of power down the highway, after i turn it off it just cranks & will not start untill it cools off about 3 hours. no smoke, check batterys & grounds, relays new & all fues good. any help???? thank you ron

P0251 is a code for the FCA, the only item on the back of the CP-3 with a wiring harness.

The symptoms are more towards injector cross over tubes being out of TQ spec.

However, symptoms can mimic different failure points.

An FCA is $100 or so and a little time to change. TQing the cross over tubes is more time intensive but no parts unless you have bad tubes.

Those 2 items are a good starting point.

A buddy has an 03 completely stock since new, (140,xxx miles) with the same problem. Cold it starts everytime. When it gets to operating temp, it cranks, but wont start. Dealer replaced lift pump cause it was reading about 4#. Seemed better for a few days. Problem came back. Dealer narrowed the problem down to #1 cylinder. Tightened the crossover tube and a coulpe days later it dropped #1 injector. Dealer replaced #1 injector and were back to cold start OK, no start when hot.

Ive read a few posts about the FCA and the dump valve. We dont want to start throwing parts at it, but we want to get it fixed, too.

Could a bad or weak FCA cause the no hot start condition? Could it cause an injector failure? Any help would be great.

Hot start problem, maybe. Injector failure, not very likely.

To check the FCA problem on a warm start unplug it and try to start. This will throw full rail pressure into the system and might build enough to start if rail pressure is low. If it rattles like crazy on start then goes back to sounding normal when you plug it in the odds are the FCA is working correctly.

Doesn't rule it out completely nor the CP-3 nor the rail PRV. Just another starting place to diagnose the real problem.

Since we're on 03's. . Mine always starts great but I've noticed that it seams to be a lot louder (injector noise) when I start it cold. More FCA symptoms?

HI guys I treid unpluging the fca after I got home with the truck & still no start when hot. all it will do is crank over, any more ideals??????? thanks ron 816-918-3319

I will check the cross over tubes this weekend & let you know. I'm lucky to have a 07 cummins 4x4 for parts, is the cp3 the same as 03 cummins????? thanks

Could be:

COV

CP3

RP relief valve

Injectors

Bad cross over tubes

The next step is get a scanner capable of reading actual rail pressure and demanded to see if it is not matching when warm. An injector and CP3 return flow test may also help pin point the issue.

When torquing cross over tubes, is it wise to pull them out and check their condition?

Yes and no.

It depends on if there is a possibility they were messed up before one acquired the truck, or, the possibility a lip has worn on the tube end from being installed so long.

If there quite a few miles on the truck, pulling the tubes and making sure the edge filters are clear may be the key to getting it to run correctly.

There is no "right" answer to that question.

I change the cp3 & presure reg. vavle. it has no codes now, the fuel presure is good 5000, it will start know when hot but it crankes to long to fire. cross tubes all look good, I changed them all this week end.
