I know that the less restriction on the intake the easier the turbo spools up, I found this on both of my trucks in the downtube to the turbo and I think this is an uneeded restriction! I did not see any reason to leave it that way, so I posted these pics, took me about 20 mins to do.

I noticed an imediate difference in the throttle response and acceleration after this mod. I'am also going to drill some holes in the bottom of the stock air box. I don't know what the 03' downtube looks like, but some of you might have run into the same problem, with all the talk of straightening the air before the turbo to help spool up easier, I wonder what the idea was behind this design, other than silencing turbo whine?

Nice job. I didn't bandsaw the end off. I routed the flanges out with a ZIP router. That way you still have the lip that helps hold the hoses in place.

Thanks for the pics!

Is the turbo sound more prevelant after this mod?

I think a little more so, you have to make some changes to the stock airbox too, that will let that turbo whine out, remove the silencer ring also.

I did the same mod on my dad's 04. 5

I was able to pop the end off where it was glued. To reassemble once it was gutted I just put a FINE bead of RTV around the entire opening, and put the cap back on. I let it sit in the vise for about 2 hours, then drilled 8 holes around the outside and put machine screws and nuts on for safe keeping, doesn't leak a bit!

Does any one know the purpose of this obstruction?

Does it have a venturi effect on air flow or is it just a device to suppress intake noise?

I agree , makes sense. It has to be for noise surppression.

I went for a drive in my 05' today and Chrysler/Cummins have gone out there way to quiet these trucks. From the interior to the motor.

It's takin' a little gettin' used to when compared to my 2nd Gen. 24 valver.

You mean you can hear your radio? :-laf

It's the damnest thing , i still out of habit shut the motor off at a drive thru.

And like you mentioned i can hear the radio , not bad . To think that i used to hate these "QUIET TRUCKS" .

I tried my darndest to get that freakin' plastic thing apart, called it every name I could think of and stopped just short of using a 20lb hammer. #@$%! set it aside and made my own out of polished stainless. See what ya think
