Warning: this is NOT a math problem!

After hanging around here for a year plus I know a couple folks already had their calculators out! :-laf

Wow, just maybe the ol' dog got something right for a change. Now what are the odds on that! :-laf And before you even think it - I did not slip Robert Patton any coin.

After reading the article in TDR about the Cummins Past, Present, and Future Hardware on pages 46 to 50, I plumb got goosebumps. :) In an unbiased nutshell, it appears Cummins stuffed most of the good stuff in the HO 305s before they had to do the 04. 5+ work arounds to meet the EPAs. A few highlights:

  • Fixed "drive way drip"
  • The HPCR has been road tested in EU since 01. And according to the Clessie Cummins article HPCR has been around a long time.
  • High contact-ratio spur gears for quiter operation.
  • HPCR benies: No VP44, cleaner combustion, improved power and response, improved cold start, lower noise, lower vibration and harhness. PS: How many of you were plumb disgusted by all that "harshness" :-laf
  • Same proven head bolts, water pump, oil pump, camshaft, valve train, and critical fasteners.
  • induction hardened valve seats. Albeit not the cobalt stellite to deal with the higher temperatures and pressures brought on by the EPAs.
  • Sculpted side walls to stiffen the block. Anyone say 53.
  • Bedplate to reduce noise and for greater durability.
  • J-jet piston oiling
  • Exhaust manifold capable of higher exhaust temps. (Still want a ATS :) )
  • 25-26 psi boost
  • NO EGR and NO CAT
  • Only one small pilot injection, and only below 2000 rpms and not under load.
  • 305 kbs vs. 550 kbs programming (errors=reflash)
  • Forged steel cracked cap con rods
  • Piston ring cooling passages

Albeit the 04. 5+ got full 4" exhaust and the 05 turbo better oiling. Sounds like simple shop and swaps to me, though. :) Now if we can have the injectors have the same track record as the old ones and come up with some real U-joints. :)

PS: Any flames should be PMed to R Patton :-laf

I would have to agree on the 03 HO, Mine just had its 2nd Birthday away from the Dealer, I have had not 1 problem with this truck. No Vibration, no front end wobble, Not 1 problem since the day I picked it up on 2/8/03 :D

Something that kinda surpirsed me about the article was the fact they stated that the HPCR has less problems than the 12 valves. That they are in fact a better, more relaible engine. I still miss the rumble and smoke though :D

I sure wish my truck would come from the factory with no cat. Really pisses me off that for a few ft lbs, they installed a cat on an engine that previously could pass without it.

Same here... absolutely the best truck I've ever owned! It was back to the dealer for one recall. Good fuel mileage and plenty of power in stock condition and will stay that way. No problems at all. :D

Still love the '03 as much as the day I drove it off the lot :) . I have had no problems at all and I doubt that I could be tempted into a new truck for several years.

Glad you caught that FDavid. That was the most important quote from the article and I was going to stuff it in last as a slam dunk, but forgot. As my wife is found of saying "Sounds like Rob"

In fact, I thought the quote meant the HPCR fuel injection had a better track record than Ol' Reliable a. k. a. P1700. But after reading it again I think you are right - the whole engine has a better track record than the 94-98 12v  Forgive me it I say AWESOME! :D
