Found pretty close to exact truck I'm wanting. It's an 04. 5 dually 4x4, cummins 600, automatic. I'll be driving the truck to work everyday and I'll be running the kids all over the place to. On the weekends I've got a 30' sandpiper fifth wheel that we pull to the state parks for some relaxation.

My question: Would I be better off with the 3. 73 gears or 4. 10's for my type of driving? I don't drive the interstates very often though I may drive the family to Florida in the this truck instead of the minivan.

Is there much of a MPG difference between the two gear ratios?

How can I tell from the sticker what the truck has? It doesn't say anything about it.

I'd get the 3. 73's unless you need the additional GCWR of the 4. 10's. I doubt you do with a 30' 5ver. We pull a 13,500 lb 36' triple slide 5th wheel that puts us on the road at 21,180 lbs GCW (21,500 lbs GCWR) - in our case, we needed the additional 1,500 lbs GCWR of the 4. 10's.

With the auto, I'd get the 4. 10's. In town you will not miss the 3. 73's and when you are towing, they are great.

I would say auto, too, but its the drivers choice.

I have a 6 speed as a daily driver (1/2 of it is in rush hour traffic), and I don't mind (I do about 100 mi/day). I have had both, but I have always enjoyed the gear spread of a 5 or 6 speed over a 4 speed auto. Of course, the cummins has such a flat powerband that lack of gearing hasn't ever really come to play.

I just love to row them gears.

I would go with a 4. 10, though. It's the only thing I wish I had gotten.

Look at the label inside the glove box - that will tell you if the truck has the 3. 73s or 4. 10s

The 4. 10s are nice around town but the thing revs its brains out in Tow / Haul mode. OBTW, I get just under 15mpg in almost all stop & go city driving (20K miles)

Juan, I don't know if you have had the opportunity to drive a 4. 10 much, but for your type of driving I think (IMHO)(. 02)(dos centavos)(etc. ) you would be much happier with the 3. 73. To me it is the best highway crusing rig I've had and plenty good for crawling around the hills. BTW you have excellent taste in vehicles. :D

We are in the market for a large fifth wheel (14,000#) and while I know thew 3. 73's will get the job done, I would have preferred the 4. 10's for that. We also spend a lot of time in the Colorado Rockies, so it's mostly up and down (and up and down... )

I'm not complaining, my '97 had 3. 54's and it pulled our 9500# trailer without a problem.

:) :) :)

I have the 4. 10s in mine and it does rev high in the tow mode. About 60 mph or so is it w/o od on. Good safe speed for pulling up grades.

Ive got the same trailer. A 30' Sandpiper. I've got bunks in the back. What's your floor plan?

I love my 3. 73 gears. If I towed any more than I do, I'd like the 4. 10's better. My old truck had 3. 55's and I would tend to put it in 5th and drive 55 mph up hills. I had to because egts would get too high in 6th at 60-65 mph, and I didn't want to drive 80 with the trailer. But, with the new truck, the 3. 73 is real borderline. I'm not sure with the auto, tho. BTW, do you have pics of your tailer?

Our camper is a 2000, 30' bunkhouse model (3 kids), fiberglass sides, living and dinning slide. We got a great deal on it used as the previous owner buys new every two years. We love the camper but my it's just to much for my current 350V8 Chevy.

I have a pre-digital camper picture of it but I don't know how to post a picture.
