04.5 Exhaust Question

My truck has about a 1000 miles on it and I want it to breath better. I'm starting to think about an intake and exhaust system and as soon as I find the courage I'm going to remove the silencer ring and maybe try to remove the intake baffles. For those of you that have straight piped your exhaust how do you pass your states vehicle inspections? Is the drone at 2000rpm really that bad? I don't think I ever heard that noise before when driving next to a truck that has been straight piped. If straight piping isn't an option because of inspections, what is the next best thing to open up airflow in the exhaust system?

I have not opened the exhaust up on my 4. 5 yet, but on the 03 that I had, the drone was definitly there. At 1800 or so rpms, it got loud in the cab. Really could not hear any change at idle in the cab or outside. sounded much better taking off outside though. Also had the afe cold air intake on the 03. Did not see improvement in milege from either one of these mods. It did seem to take off and pick up a little quicker with the intake and the exhaust on compared to when it was new. When the truck was sold, I was getting right at 17 or so miles per gallon on the highway. Truck had 18k miles on it and was an 3500 4 door srw automatic.

Most states do not bother looking at exhaust or emissions on diesels.

The removal of the cat is a question you have to search thru for your specific state and city requirements. We do have a single and dual 4 inch cat back system that is legal and we have an optional cat test pipe that folks use for racing and off road use though that a lot of members use. Without a cat you will have some drone, shorter length trucks seem to have less that quad cab 8 foot bed one though.
