I'm towing a 15K race trailer from Orange County to Wisconsin with my 04. 5 CTD 5. 9L and last night (Saturday night) after 1300 hundred flawless miles I slowed into a small town on the Texas/Oklahoma stateline on Hwy 54 and lost pedal and truck just idled.

When the signal turn to green I pushed on the pedal and it was like a dead pedal... it finally caught up and roared back to life when it was around 1800 rpm. . I took off and continued at 2000 rpm plus no problems, but then when I got to Liberal, Kansas and was stopped at a light it did it again and it's very very slow coming off the line. It was late and I pulled into a motel and been searching all the forums today looking for the answer...

Nothing open on Easter Sunday in Kansas and can't pull the code. . the check engine light did pop on.

The lift pump is seems to be working, the CP3 injector pump is only 30K old and even today the truck will idle in the parking lot, fire right up, but no go on the gas unless we wait for the delay while on the pedal. In the past, when I had a LP go out it was nothing immediately and we coasted to the side of the road---a couple years ago... this is definitly different... because the trucks starts and idles etc...

Stuck in Liberal, Kansas on Hwy 54...

Any ideas?

desertbull,

Those P22XX series codes might be related to a failed Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS). The APPS is basically a reostat with an electronic idle switch connected to the accelerator pedal which converts pedal position to a voltage used by the engine's computer. I'm not very familiar with 3rd gen trucks, but I know in 2nd gen trucks this is an epensive ($400-$500) highly failure prone part. When the APPS fails to give a normal voltage signal and/or the "idle" or "not-idle" indication (a. k. a. "Idle Valuation Signal") doesn't match that voltage, the engine computer defaults to idle as a safety measure.

If it is the APPS, it should be Mopar part number 53031575AH. The current MSRP is $504. 00 and a typical online price is $345 at a MoparPartsAmerica.

I believe I've seen reference to a TSB being out from Chrysler for "dead pedal syndrome" in 3rd gen trucks, but it could be you simply have nothing more complicated than a failed APPS! Obviously a dealer could quickly verify the exact problem and take care of it, or you could try locating and replacing the APPS yourself.

That P1740 code is transmission related and could just be there by coincidence (unrelated to an APPS failure). I believe that code is related to problems with the transmission's overdrive solenoid or other internal problems.

Good luck,

John L.

Thanks for your explanation. I drove it around w/o the trailer just a while ago and everything is back to normal and truck runs fine, but I don't want to get back on the road with another issue so I'm gonna wait until tomorrow and see what the small dealer says here in Liberal, Kansas.

A few other friends have called with there input as well, seems that I'd like to change out the APPS and hopefully be done with the issue.

Thanks-

You're welcome.

And that's very typical of past accounts I've read here on the TDR of an APPS that's failing... you'll get one or two dead pedal at idle experiences, then it dies for good leaving you stranded. You're smart to fix it permanently while you're still in town! :)

Best regards,

John L.
