I was wondering when Dodge went with the In-Tank pump. I have been told yes and no by many different persons.

I want to go with a FASS with my 04. 5 and just curious if I am going to have to drop the tank and put in a line or can hook up the 3/8 line right to the top of the tank like on my 2nd gen?

TIA

Smitty

My 04, had the pump on the back of the filter housing..... my son's 04. 5 also has the same pump... . My 05 came with the pump in the tank... . if they put them on the 04. 5's it was after my sons truck was built.....

My 2004. 5 had the on engine pump die and strand me on the way to work yesterday. Completely stock 2004. 5 with 52,847 miles on the odometer. Fortunately I bought the DC extended warranty and it is now at the local dealer to install the kit that puts the pump in the tank. This is after one Chevy tow truck ride :( to a local (non dealer) repair shop, filter change & some troubleshooting there ($170) a call to DC and second tow truck ride on a Ford :( to the dealer. I will post again next week with the results.

The pump is covered under the engine warrenty so don't let them charge you a deductable. The extended warrenty should not even come into play.

Your engine has a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty, unless it has been voided for aftermarket parts.

If you would have called the 800 number in your owners manual the tow would have been free also.

My brother's 04. 5 had the in tank pump & we switched to the fass. I heard that it was not common on 04. 5 CTD, but was installed later in the production year.

The $170 did include the towing but you are right it was a shock. I thought mine was in the tank too until it failed and the mechanic showed it to me on the block behind the filter housing.

Did your brother buy it used? The 04. 5's did not come with the lift pump in the tank. That started on the 05's. If he bought it that way then it had already been switched out. Lift pump failures on 04. 5 and previous years are common. And on the earlier generations a lift pump failure would also damage(or cause failure) in the injection pump. The VP44's were notorious for this.

Anyway, an aftermarket lift pump is a good call. Check out the Glacier Diesel unit as well. There are a few others also available. The set up used is configured depending on whether the lift pump is in tank or not. . So, you need to know where it is before you order the new setup. Good luck and keep us informed (with pics if possible)
Cheers
Mike

As I remember the 2004. 5 was sort of a ******* year with alot of changes before going into the 05 model year.

If I remember right SOME of the 2004. 5's got a #6 fuel line clamp, different type of tps, and in tank pump all in the same model year and not all at the same time.

I like my #6 clamp

I think the intank pump happened towards the end of the 04. 5 build

We don't know what the build date is of your truck SMITTY ? look on the drivers door

Just got the lift pump (which was definitely an engine-mounted pump) on my 2004. 5 (31700 miles) replaced today with an in-tank pump. Found metal in the fuel filter during the filter change last week, and the Dodge tech said the pump was "probably on its way out".

When I picked up the truck, I saw on the dealer paperwork that he had a note that indicated the tested flow rate of the old pump was just about half of what their minimum spec was. Wish I had written down the flow rate numbers he listed, and the dealer wouldn't give me a copy of his hand-written note. I hadn't realized that they test lift pumps for flow rates rather than pressures.

Pretty happy this got caught before I ended up stuck on the side of the road in the kind of snow and low temps we have been getting up here lately. .
