My first problem with my truck tonight and only 4000 miles. When I started it to go to work it made a funny noise so I shut it down and opened the hood. Found that the belt was a bit chewed up. It was only ¾ the width of what it should have been. The missing pieces were wrapped around the fan shaft.

I am now driving my wife’s truck until Monday when I get a chance to take it to the dealer.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could have caused this or was it just a bad belt?

My only concern is that the dealer will replace it and it will happen again.

I think you have file that one under the heading of **. . happens.

If could have been anything, like something from the road that got tossed up and into the path of the belt. When you do get the new belt, look and see if the number on it are the right ones. Hey atleast you were lucky enough to have it happen at home and it appears to have not hurt anything else, count your blessing.

No ideas on that one, 42K on mine and still looks new,( just checked tonight after 2300 miles in the last 46 hours!!!)

Shredded belt

Did you check your neighbor's cat:) ? They can tear up fan belts, but usually in cold weather. Check your belt tensioner for alignment or loose bolt. Was the remains of your belt in the right groves of your pullys, or were they all cockeyed?

Its not a first, mine did the same thing at about the same miles. The dealer could not find any problems other than the belt.

A new belt and 5K miles later still no problem and the belt stopped squeaking at shut down.

I just picked up the truck.

They said it was install incorrectly and replaced it. Nothing else.

Might have just been a bad belt. Only time will tell.
