Coming home last night around 2:00 AM and 16 degrees outside the engine started bucking and kicking then died. It fired right up and drove for another couple miles then started bucking again. Died several times but would always start until it finally died at a stop sign. It will fire up after hard cranking, but then dies shortly after it fires. Does it sound like the lift or fuel pump? I had it towed into a Dodge dealer and they will look at it tomorrow. It is an 04 305/555 with 48RE if that matters. Anything else it could be? And if it is either pump, what is the current reccomendation for replacement pumps and what shoud it cost?

Thanks,

Rhino

Could also be the Crank Position Sensor (cps).

Edit: could also be the yellow wire near the starter. Others in the past have reported problems with chaffing of this wire. Also, TDR member "steved" recently reported worn/chaffed wires near the oil filter that was the root cause of his problems.

My lift pump went out and the VP44 (01) had to be reprimed at a shop to get it running right again. Probably not your problem but your symptoms are the same as what I had.

My 04. 5 did same thing a couple winters ago -- I got about 100yds from driveway, died, would restart, go only about 20yds, died, barely started again, then wouldn't start. I had it towed to dealer (under warranty), and it started right up no problem for them next morning. The only explanation they had was water got in line and froze, and of course thawed once they had it in shop.

I've been using Powerservice additive ever since, and it has never happened again, truck always reliable.

Hope this is all yours is. Good luck.

I had an 04. 5 do the same thing. It ended up being the lift pump. If you don't have to many miles on it, it should be covered under warranty

126K miles, out of warranty, cost me $960 for the new lift pump. Thanks for help, guys.

OOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry to hear you spent that much on the OEM pump. When mine went out recently, on my 04, I bought one that came off a 1999 model, and made a bracket and mounted it down on the frame just ahead of the tank. And just extended the wires that had activated the OEM pump to power the pump at the new location. Much cheaper. I do not recall how much I spent on the older style Carter, but it was under $100. Also, I had to engineer a fitting to take the place of the OEM pump, because , the fuel would not flow through it . It took me a few hours to manufacture it all, but in the future if/when it goes out again, it will only take about 20 minutes to replace it with very little cost. PS, please forgive spelling errors.

Same thing, Boulder, CO, 3 hrs ago!

Hi guys,

been reading posts for the last 4 months since I bought the truck (see sig). Forgive me if I'm coming late or posting poorly, but my truck is DEAD and seems to have same symptoms. Engine died without warning 3 hrs ago just as I was rounding the corner to park. Coasted to the curb, and I can turn it over and get 3 seconds or so of idle, then it dies. Only 66k on the odo.

Is the consensus view to check out the lift pump and the CPS? JRhinehart, is your problem solved?

Its cold here, but not cold enough today for freezing or fuel jelling.

Also, I'm pretty new to the truck mechanics but hoping to learn ... and I have learned GAUGES are part of the next batch of aftermarket products ... however no towing or hard use on this truck since adding mods.

THANKS !

Most likely is the lift pump. If you are handy with tools you can install an inline pump and the block off plate for the old pump without too much hassle. should cost under 250. 00usd. + your time.

Your lift pump is warrantied to 100,000 miles. Yours died just like mine, and many other 04. 5s. The replacement pump will be in tank. My replacement pump done under the 100,000 mile warranty cost me ZERO... . NADA... . Nothing.
