On the way back to MT for my Mules & other critters stopped to squirt the dirt & refill the coffee thermos & get motion lotion. Got back it tried to turn the ignition key it would not turn jiggling the gear selector did nothing break peddle stomping did nothing. Happen to have a old greeezer next fuel lane over ask if he could help? he was a retired locksmith. he gave the key a tap with his hand in the direction of insertion  key turned like new!!!!!!

I asked if it was the key? or ignition switch? his guess would be the switch THEY DONT MAKE THEM IN MEXICO OR CHINA LIKE THEY DID HERE MANY MOONS AGO.

I was so pleased that I didn't think to ask him when I change the ignition switch will I need to re-key the door locks as well too keep it a 1 key deal?

BIG

PS: I may not respond to any come backs for a bit we'er hauling xxx back to Indy in AM

The ignition switch and the key cylinder are separate parts. If the key did not turn till jiggled most likely cylinder is worn possibly key as well

Keys seem to wear worse than the cylinders and dust is an ever present problem unless one lives in a pristine environment. A little liquid graphite will usually help keep tumblers from sticking.

If you decide to replace the switch, a new one can be ordered with the same key as the original. I did so for a Ford Focus a few years ago. I ordered it online, much cheaper than the dealer. My daughter had a similar situation while out shopping away from home in Reno. I was in Oregon at the time and learned about the key "bump" from a Google search. It worked! I had her leave the key in the ignition until the switch I ordered, and I could get to her home to replace it a couple of weeks later.

You can also order a lock cylinder that you you assemble to match your key. Available at Rock Auto. Saves you from having to deal with new key and security system issues. I've done this. Takes about 30 minutes to assemble.

Ignition Key on Dodge has been working fine but have had problems with door looks on all the car door locks and some padlocks, until I tried this
