A friend of mine called last night and said that his 04 quit yesterday. He said that it sputtered for a while then died. The lift pump is in the tank and was not buzzing. He said that there was 4 wires going back to the tank, 2 small, 2 larger. He figured the two larger ones went to the pump and there was no power to them. The two small ones he figured went to the fuel gauge, they were showing 8 volts. Isn't there a relay in the fuse panel? He did have a code trip. He thinks it is a code for the fuel pump relay. Has anyone had this trouble before? Does the relay go bad sometimes? Could something have caused the relay to go bad?

Thanks for any information.

The relay might be under the hood in the power distribution center... short of that... I was told the older (2nd gens) used a relay built into the PCM to run the LP.

Unless he has had the update lift pump done, the pump should be on the left side of the motor. When my original pumped failed it threw a couple codes as well. Now I have the update pump in the tank, and so far no problems!

The 3rd gens have the pumps mounted to the backside of the fuel filter until I believe the 05's which then have the pump in the tank.

I would look for a blowen fuse or bad relay to start with. Both should be in the PDC under the hood on the drivers side.

All the 05s should have a intank pump, but the "change over" was in 04. 5... my 600 was on of the first produced, but I found through research and a FASS dealer that some of the later 04s did have intank pumps (hit or miss).

Just FYI... but yes, generally 05 was the start of the intank pump.
