Towing with Lift

Apportioned plates....

A friend has an 04 2500 48re short bed with 4:10's. He can't seem to find the towing specs anywhere on the internet so he gave me a call.

He wants to know what Dodge Recommends his Max Trailer weight is.

He is looking at a Wildwood Toy Hauler (not a 5th wheel) with a GVRW of 11470lbs. The dealer is setting him up with the correct load equalizer hitch and sway controls.

My bets are this is within the weight Dodge recommendations. We all know the truck can pull it with no problems, but is he within his legal GCWR weight?

What about the factory hitch, will it work with a GVRW of 11470lbs?

Specs on camper is 7480 dry weight.

That sounds like my truck.

Gross combined weight from Dodge is 20k. I am pushing 22k. My truck with 5er connected grosses 11. 5k.

So he should weigh the truck loaded, (my guess it would around 7000 lbs), then subtract 7000 lbs from 20,000 = 13,000 lbs, which would be the Gross Combination weight (max truck and trailer weight).

well, not really... the GCVWR is the total weight of the truck and trailer, so that means the total weight of truck and trailer can be 20,000 lbs. the GVWR is probably 8800 lbs. that means the truck itself, with pin weight (weight of the trailer transferred to the truck) can not exceed 8800 lbs. hope this helps

I believe TJ and TowPro gave the same answer but stated it in two different ways.

Either way 20k is the limit no matter what the weight of your truck.
