Where is the break in the model year and how do you tell which is which ??

I just bought a '04 model 3500 SRW QC and am trying to figure out what I have. The truck is at the dealer in Pensacola FL. It had sustained a small amount of paint damage in Hurricane Ivan last month. So, it's in the bodyshop getting prettied up, and not here where I can look at it. I do have the VIN if there's a letter designator in it.

The truck had been on the lot for about 8 or 9 months and the sales department was motivated to sell it to me to get it off the books. I did pretty well price wise.

The motor change was 1-1-04. There is also a sticker on the drivers side of the valve cover that tells you what the engine is rated. Sounds like it's a 305/555 engine.

This one has a January 04 build date, but it's not like DCX follows any kind of set pattern.

They followed a pattern on this one... under penalty of Federal law! New emissions requirements.

If it's an '04 and was built after 01/01/04, it's a 600.

I pick it up tommorrow. The valve cover decal will be one of the first things I look at.

That will tell you everything you need to know. If the HP is 325 than it's a 600. Pawpaw is right, 1 Jan started new rules, if the truck was built after this date, than it is without a doubt a 600. Hope your new pickup is as good to you as mine has been to me. Congrats on the purchase.

325 / 600 Drives nice on the interstate.

I almost got backed into by a lady at Waffle House less than a mile after picking it up this morning.
