Gentlemen

I know this has been brought up before and I forget, but what gives with the rapid discoloration of the oil on my 05 325/610. The beast has now got 6K miles. I am using Chevron Dello 400 15-40 and Fleetguard LF-3894 Stratapore filters. Here is a brief maint interval of my oil changes (all in an effort to try and clean it up). Truck was bought on 10-30-04.

*First oil change 11-23-04 @1,340

*Second oil change 12-11-04 @2,350 (before a 3K trip empty no load)

*Third oil change12-30-04 @5,250

Now as you can see this has been way overkill as far as the owners manual recomends and each time the oil is changed it is dirty looking within 500 miles :{. I can't for a minute think how anyone in their right mind would let an oil change go for 7,500 miles let alone 15,000 miles?. I thought it would start to clean up a little by now as the rings start to wear a foot print in the cylinders. Now on my 99 it would go 2,500 to 3K before it would even begin to discolor , What gives?

Now with no EGR valve is it the catalytic converter causing excessive back pressure on the combustion chambers?. Is it just the nature of the 325/610 and all it's girth (more fuel being admitted to the engine)?. Or will it infact clean up as the motor continues to break in?.

Oil is supposed to look, "Dirty. " It's full of detergents. That's how it cleans your engine. If your oil looks clean after driving, it's not doing its job.

Stop worrying about the way the oil looks, and change it at the recommended intervals.

I just bought 610 1/19/05 drove 400 miles home and checked the oil it was black black!! I changed it last nite with 901 miles on it. I drove about 20 miles and checked it again and it was just as black as it was before i changed it. So i am thinking its the way it its going to be. I was used to my 02 ho at 4000 to 5000 mi. thye oil was still fairly clean looking. If you find out any thing about this please post it or?

Dirty oil

Oil is a cleaner for your motor. Diesel motors require a lot of cleaning, due to the nature of the beast. They run harder than a gas motor, and the blow by ( which is in every motor) can and will be more than in a gas motor. The oil being black in normal in a Diesel after a couple hundred of miles. Just as Tim said, change your oil as recommended by the manufacturer and every thing will be O. K. Don't forget to change your air filter as required.

It looks like it is the nature of the beast. Mine was not as dark as the others but was too black for the mileage. I do the changes early for the first three on any beast that I own.

You guys that are bla bla on the oil is doing it's thing could not have owned a good old 12 valve or 24 valve. My last 99 would run about 4k in the summer on dino and about 4. 5k on xd-3 0/40 synthetic blend. At this milage the oil was very clear yet with 0 usage. Changes were done @ 150-200hrs and never added a drop right up to 125k.

The oil gets black on the new ones because they changed the injection timing. It is nothing to worry about whatsoever. Changing the oil simply because it is black is a complete waste of money and time. There is no problem running 7500 miles between changes. In fact, DC cut Cummins recommendation (15k) in half. Forget the crap about 3000 mile oil changes--that's all marketing. Think about it, it's the aftermarket that promotes these intervals--they want your money and want your business more often. Just use good quality oil (Rotella, Delo, or Valv Blue) and good filters (Fleetguard) and that engine will outlast the truck its in.

Do not worry. The 600 engines that are getting 15-20K on them are starting to clear up. I would imagine that the 610 would do the same. You have three more oil changes before that happens :-laf

Thanks Gentlemen

I was waiting to hear what RonsRig said I guess there just wasn't enough 6 honey's out there with enough miles on them with the rings seated yet. I had pretty much come to the conclusion that it was the pilot injection.

What is a fogzilla? Is it upgraded fog lights? I have a brite box on my 04 and could use better fog/corning lights then the stock units. Thanks for any info you have
