Could someone explain the changes in the '05 48RE versus previous years. My '05 has the TOW/HAUL button, but you cannot lockout OD. Are earlier 48RE's like this?
 
Guys, the question was specifically about '05's, not '04's or '04. 5's. There was a change made to the '05's and OD does not get locked out when you put it in tow/haul mode. Just trying to get more info about this and why DC did this? What are the benefits?
 
There was some earlier talk about the tow/haul button. I tried it out with a small load last week in the rockies.



First, It does NOT lock out the OD in any way. The manual claims that there is a grade braking feature built in and that means a 4-3 downshift under steady braking. I had an Allison in my last truck and if this is grade braking, it is pretty pathetic. It happens in a totally unpredictable manner and is really of no use at all to slow the truck. An OD lock out sure would be nice.



Tow/haul going up the hill actually works pretty well. The main advantage I found was that it locks the convertor in third MUCH earlier and you can really feel the difference. Lock-up comes much sooner in both third and fourth, I really liked it for climbing hills with a load.

Then I ask you why, does it downshift out of overdrive downhill and will not shift into OD after throttle up again... . maybe I'm doin something wrong? I'll have to try this again tomorrow.

Correct me if I'm mistaken but it looks to me like the original question is asking about all 48 RE's. Not just the 05s.

Tri Guy - I thought the title of the thread and the 1st sentance were pretty clear about asking for info on '05's.

Actually, in your last sentance your are asking a question by saying " Are earlier 48re's like this?". This is why Big Bob was kind enough to share his input with you.
 
My O3 303/555 with 48RE locks out 4th OD Gear in Tow/Haul mode.



Would the ATS Commander be a good bomb for 05 48RE's so you could essentially have complete control over TQ lockup and lock out OD. I'm not sure if it can disable OD or not but would be a simple mod to help the 05 guys out.
