I've run into a P0088 high rail pressure code and a rough idle/die condition at startup. *I think I may have gotten a batch of dirty gas, as I limped into the station the other day while the semi was filling the station tanks. *Only got ~10gals but a day after that, this issue started. *I've pulled a sample of diesel and I'm waiting for it to settle out, as well as pulled the filter. *Filter is pretty gnarly and gunked up. *I've also pulled the FCA and attempted to clean it with some WD40 in the ports to see if that will help get it running right again after a filter change.

Question: does the FCA for the '05 5.9L rattle when you shake it? *Mine isn't rattling even after cleaning...

Not sure if I should siphon the tank, drop it, and flush it, or drain it and refill with clean diesel and a crap load of additive. * What do you guys think?

Any other things I should think of before going further?

I just put a secondary CAT filtration/separator combo on order and will definitely install that before I attempt to start the truck back up as well.

I would let the Station management know via email for documentation. How soon before you get back results ? Wouldn't be bad idea to drop tank and and pull all the fuel then put 5 gallons in there with new fuel filtration and a bunch of diesel service or seafoam . Yes I think the FCA is supposed to rattle. Keep us up

I haven't contacted the station yet, and I haven't sent a sample anywhere. I've never done that and don't know who to send it to. Any suggestions?

Looks like I'm ordering an FCA in the meantime.

Thanks for the reply.

  • When Monitored:Engine running.
  • Set Condition:Fuel pressure is above a calibrated value for a calibrated amount of time.

Possible Causes
FUEL CONTROL ACTUATOR (FCA)
FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR
INTERMITTENT CONDITION

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
[h=3]Diagnostic Test[/h]1. Fuel Pressure Sensor
Using the scan tool, compare the scan tool reading for fuel pressure set point to the scan tool reading for actual fuel pressure.
Does the actual fuel pressure correlate with the fuel pressure setpoint while operating the engine over various operating conditions?
Yes
  • Go To 2

No
  • Check the electrical connector of the Fuel Control Actuator, if the connection is tight, replace the fuel control actuator.
  • Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)

2. FUEL PUMP
Turn the ignition on.
Disconnect the Electronic Fuel Control Actuator connector.
Connect an incandescent test light across the Fuel Control Actuator driver pin and the Fuel Control Actuator return wire at the fuel control actuator connector.
Observe the test light.
The ECM will perform a self test of the circuit which should momentarily flash the test light brightly, one time, approximately 20 seconds after being connected.
NOTE: Compare test light brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.

Did the light flash brightly?
Yes

No

p-Bar, the station is a Loaf-n-Jug. I have always filled up there and have never had a problem before...

Bob, thanks for the pinout and troubleshooting flows. I don't have a scan tool, can I use a standard pressure gauge instead of a scanner? If not, could you suggest a scanner to use? For #2, how could a failing pump cause too high of fuel pressure? I would think it would be the other way around and have low fuel pressure. The truck knocks like crazy at idle seeming to correlate with higher rail pressures.

Again, thank you guys for the insights!!

This new format sucks. I can't see the last post in any thread.
You won't find a pressure gauge you can afford that can see the pressures we run

Bob, obviously I'm new here and now confused but, if there isn't a gauge that can read the pressure, why buy a rail pressure gauge...?

The rail pressure gauge you are talking about uses the factory installed sensor. If your sensor is inaccurate your gauge on the pillar will give a false reading.

what bob said, i bought a autometer gauge to help me find a problem, worked on it several days then hooked up the autoenginuity only to find my gauge was reading 22% high

Thanks guys. The new FCA shows up tomorrow and the fuel sample I pulled looks fine (no test kit) but been sitting for a week and I don't see anything in it. I'm going to dose the tank with PS clean-diesel just in case. Still waiting on the secondary CAT filter/ws... I hope the FCA fixes this. I need my truck back bad!!!

UPDATE : FIXED

Replacing the FCA fixed my problem. CEL went out after about 3 trips. I still have the secondary filtration system to install, but that'll be more for piece of mind. Thanks everyone for your inputs!!
