05 with 6k miles and had to dealer because engine is very noisy. was quiet when I took delivery but sounds like a valve or lifter that is louder at times. almost as loud as my old powerstroke. anyhow dealer told me a rep looked at it today and advised them that some are louder than others(_____). dealer also told me that 12. 5mpg is average and I have the latest pcm flash. what can I do. I am not happy with the engine noise as everywhere I go I am always asked what is wrong with your truck and it didnt sound like this 2 months ago.

thanks again

Might want to do a search here 3 gen injector knock/ failure . Sound like a bad injector , some have posted such . keep us posted.

You must run into very different people than I do. My 03 and 04 both made ticking, knocking, pinging noises from time to time (for 45,000+ miles each). Not one time did anyone ask me what's wrong with my truck. If they had, I would have told them "it's a diesel".

thanks for your input but the three people that asked me why so noisy all have 04/05 diesels also but I guess they are unaware of the sounds of a diesel.

RHummer, what are the chances one or more of your friends who own the 04/05 diesels could meet you at the dealer? I would think that would be good for comparison.

Hummer! I too have an 05 that is much noisier than my 03! Fuel mileage is running a full 2. 5 mpg less than my 03. I should have my rear kicked for trading in my 03! Dealer has been no help at all, and just shruggs their shoulders. At this point I am NOT a happy camper! Since this truck is used for business, accurate records are kept for fuel and service, so my figures are positively accurate. 03 SWB, 2wd, quad cab, automatic, 3. 73, averaged 17. 7 for 42000 miles! City 15. 4, highway 19. 8. The 05, same exact equipment has avg 15. 2 for 7000 miles. The engine runs rough on 5 cyl at times, (never when at the dealer!) blows black smoke, and is nowhere near as fast as the 03 I had! My neighbor has also commented on engine noise! He asked me why my new truck was so much noisier than my 03! Dealer says that DC is not aware of any "injector" problems! HA! I guess I'll have to take it to the next level; or if this is the way the new 05 engines are, DC is in trouble. I think since DC took over the computer management from Cummins, things have gone to hell!

had a friend drop me off at dealer after they called and said it sounds fine. I parked his next to mine and there was a huge differance. service manager said I can hear the difference and will get back to you. well he got back to me and said dc said if it is not broke dont fix it!!!

04.5 engine noise

First 2000 mi. was a quiet engine for me too. Last 2000 mi. noise has almost reached level of my old 98. 5. Dealer says there are some noise issues, not all the same, but he says that it won't blow up. Performance hasn't dropped, but mileage seems to have slipped. Something must be at fault, as other 3rd generation models do not make this much noise. If anyone finds a cure, I'll be watching.

will keep everyone posted as I spoke with another dealer today and I was told bad inj from the way I described it. I will find out next week. dealer claims they are having alot of inj problems.

thanks

I bought my 03 in fall of 02. My buddy bought his shortly after. Then, about 3 months ago, he bought an 05. 05 is quieter in the engine compartment, louder(in a good way) from the exhaust, and quite a bit tougher in 6th. Way impressive! RHummer/Guzzi, I would suspect your right on with the injector thing.

engine knock story

My father-in-law just had his 04. 5 back to the dealer for 'the knock'. The truck has 4000 miles on it. The dealer is 500 miles away. He changed his oil before he took it in and thought he might have a leak near the back of the engine. From what he told me on the phone the main bearing was leaking, they changed the crank seal, cleaned the injectors and adjusted the valves. They said the valves were way out of whack. They told him on the phone before he took it in to run injector cleaner through it, not to idle too much and that it probably just just needed a valve adjustment. Now that he has it out the shop, he said he gained a couple of mpg and it's quiet again. I'll report back again when he gets home and I can look at the work order and get the full story.

My 05 started to knock a bit too. Started using 16oz of Diesel Clean per 24 gallons of diesel. Drove it hard. Noise went away. Still using the same proportion of Diesel Clean. Engine quieter than when new. These engines seem to carbon up easily.

I agree with DDahl. I got the knock at 7000 miles on my '04. Started using Hammer Down diesel additive. Three tanks later, knock went away. Hasn't been back. 22,000 miles.

04.5/05 engine noise

Been reading all threads on subject and have made appointment for TSB reflash (some say might help) tomorrow. Will try diesel additive next, thanks for help. Most replys lead to inj problems.

04.5 engine noise

Good news on mine. Had TSB 18-037-04 done yesterday am. So far so good, noise quit and has stayed away. Hope is stays fixed, some says ok, others say it is temporary. At least it sounds good for two days. I'm not sure of what the reflash changes, but I like it so far. Dealer said his search on star link just indicated that these models get noiser after break in, no good reason.

See issue 47, page 50 about which models they will reflash.

Good luck out there

Find a good dealer who is willing to do an injector kill test on all the injectors. You most likely have a bad injector.

My '05 is quite as a mouse and has been for 24000 miles. Oo.
