Replacing Injectors

Guys, a horse friend of my girlfriend sent her a message looking for help with her 05. I haven't looked at it yet, but I may try to tomorrow. It sounds like a bad ECM, but I wouldn't jump to any conclusions until I diag it a bit more and talk over her exact problem.

Just curious what you guys think, this is the message she sent Tracey

"hi i have a 05 dodge cummin diesal... . when it is not warmed up and you put it in gear you can floor it and it has no power... then when it is warmed up and you put your foot on the brake the engines revs up and shoots out from under me... its been 3 places and no one agrees and there not cheap things"

Thanks!

Assuming this is an auto truck, sounds like a torque converter problem.

FYI, that be a large SWAG with the info provided. :D

That's all the info I have... lol. I am aware it's vague, I hope to be able to get some more info tonight or tomorrow so I actually understand what's going on, we'll see...

so I am now 99% on the torque converter. The truck has no power off idle like a stator issue and pulls through the brakes unless bumped into neutral like a TCC issue. The dealer is telling her she needs a trans, I am think a good aftermarket converter will fix the issue.

She also stated (and this bothers me a bit... ) that the dealer "replaced 3 sensors in the trans" a few weeks before the problem started... Does the 48RE use a dedicated solenoid for TCC lockup? I have a feeling those "3 sensors" weren't sensors but rather solenoids...

I don't do a ton with the 48RE, an LCT I could diag without issue, but my dodges are both manual trans, and that's been the bulk of my experience.

There are 3 solenoids and 1 sensor, IIRC. Yes, the TCC lockup is a seperate solenoid and circuit. It is normally open, to activate it the ECU side of it needs to be grounded. That what the sense wire in the trans harness does.

That circuit is monitored for resistance between 5 ohms and 100 ohms, above or below that the ECU shuts down the trans control relay and throws DTC's saying there are problems. You will have no lockup at any time and limp mode.

Easy way to check is disconnect the trans control harness and see if it still has the problem. It will throw codes but all the elctronics are disabled and you should be able to drop it in gear and see if it still has the problem.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have it at my shop this week so I can confirm or deny electrical vs mechanical failure. I actually have a 3000 mile stock 48RE converter in a box on my garage floor, but if it is the converter, knowing she tows a 14k horse trailer, I am going to try to convince her to put a Goerend in.
