I Have A 2005 Ram2500 4x4 With G-56 6-speed transmission ,when At In Neutral At Idle It Makes A Kind Of Rattling Noise (kind Of Sounds Like A Throw Out Bearing Does),when The Clutch Is Depressed It Stops. Any Thoughts, Truck Has 28,000 Miles On It.

Here are the symptoms I had when the dealer replaced my G56:

1) Very difficult to get into 1st or 2nd gear from a standstill - sometimes real hard!

2) A growling noise when the clutch was released in neutral - was getting progressively louder

3) If in 1st or 2nd gear and the clutch was pushed in, the truck would not coast smoothly. The truck would lurch as if the clutch was not disengaging completely.

Number 2 seems to be on your list. Typically a bad throwout bearing will make noise when the clutch is depressed. Sounds like a warranty visit to your dealer will be needed to get it sorted out.

Depressing the clutch causes the input shaft on the transmission to stop turning. If this stops the noise, you may have a niosy transmission input shaft bearing.

Not always... I had a defective clutch assembly that had those exact symptoms... dealer replaced the clutch and the noise stopped, but its coming back again 65k later.

I would suspect a faulty clutch... maybe even the throwout bearing isn't seated in the arm correctly... could also be that wonderful new Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) too.

Oh, not that it helps, but the 03s had a TSB out of that.

I have an 06 with the 6 speed , with the same noise,at 1500 miles i changed all the fluids in the trans and front and rear diffs. I used amsoil severe gear in the diffs and amsoil in the trans. After about 50 miles the neutral gear rattle stopped and has not returned. This gear rattle has been around for quite sometime in manuals from all mfg's.

The dealer replaced my flywheel with an updated one that took care of the rattle in neutral and when shutting off the truck without the clutch pushed in.
