05' Turbo Failure

Had the turbo fail on the 05 Ram. Dealer replaced the turbo. Truck runs fine but I have a question about oil residue in the intake piping and inner cooler.

Does this need to be cleaned out? Also dealers fix for oil in the exhaust system was to drill a small hole in the bottom of the muffler. Is this a proper fix? Give me some guidance.

Spun that little huffer a little to fast 'eh? I wouldn't worry about the oil in the exhaust tract, there is nothing in there to ruin (except maybe the CAT), might smell bad for a little while but nothing to worry about. The turbo to intercooler probably isn't that big of a deal either (regarding oil), my only concern would be turbo chunks that are floating around between the turbo and intake, they could be a problem.



Have you yanked the pipes off of the intercooler or looked under the intake horn? I would pull the intake horn (real easy) and look at the grid heater to see if it has ended up with any oil, and the cold tube into the intercooler just to get an idea of how much oil has made its way toward engine. Again I don't think the oil is much of an issue but chunks of HY-9 are never good for the motor.

Stock 05', 43k The turbo started making noise. I seceduled an appt. at the dealer. But before the dealer could get it in the turbo quit. I was told only that the turbo had failed.

If stock then perhaps it was just a funky turbo to start with. Obviously, the oil should be changed ASAP if it hasn't been already.

If the dealer reads all the warnings in the service manual or is half way bright at all he will know the intercooler and piping needs to be cleaned. If not and there is oil in there, as soon as he hits the throttle he will be sorry. He also needs to pre oil the new turbo or it will increase the chance of another failure. That is also a warning in the service manual.

sag2 is right on the money here. That innercooler and piping should have been cleaned of any oil.

My 06 turbo failed also. It was completely stock with 9K mi. They replaced the intercooler, turbo, and all the hoses, there was metal and oil throughout. I need to go back because I can hear metal bouncing around in the perverter too. Has anyone else had this problem? The dealer said mine was the fourth one he has seen. I'd rather change to aftermarket, than have it do that again. So far this truck likes free rides on the tow truck.

Metal in the converter??? First of all, you couldn't possible hear it. Second of all, by the time metal went from the turbo, thru the motor, out to the cat, your engine would've bit the dust...

Probably from the exhaust side? Turbine wheel?

OH ya you can hear it, like marbles bouncing around in a tin can, RDyson has it right, it's the turbine wheel, so it doesn't go through the motor, just goes out the exhaust side.
