Hi all, need some help to figure out why when I'm taking off from a start that it feels like my e-brake in on, until I pick up some speed 30-35 and up. And the transmission is shifting through all gears. Seems ok, in shifting. If I keep driving around the block my transmission temp gauge goes up and that isn't normal for being empty. Could the tc be locked up when I'm at idle and then taking off would it be creating extra load on transmission, motor? I can't use my truck till this gets resolved, All help much appreciated. Thanks

Since you said it's using all gears, it sounds like the over-running clutch in the converter has failed. It is running free all the time, which leaves your converter to function as a simple fluid coupling without its 2X+ torque multiplication. Once the truck is up to speed, you don't notice it, because the stator would be free-wheeling anyway.

At an idle is it trying to pull thru the brakes? That usually indicates a failed TC.

If you manually shift it does it feel different?

Any codes?

With the temps jumping that way it sounds like something is either slipping badly, dragging, or its in 2 gears at once.

I doubt it's in two gears at once. Years ago a drove a Chevy van with the TH350 that had a locked (failed) low gear sprag clutch. It took off fine, but as soon as it shifted to second, the van came to a quick stop, until it shifted back to first.

thanks rscurtis, for the reply I guess I'll have to take it to a transmission shop local and have them test drive and see if they can come up with a answer. I'll let you all no what they say thanks Dave

thanks for the reply cerberusiam, after the rebuild at idle it has always felt like it wants to pull thru the brakes I guess different stall speed? Manually shifting it acts the same. No codes I'll have to take to local shop and see what they say. I'll let ya no thanks Dave TDR is great!

Does the engine rev trying to keep the idle up when you come to a stop?

A lower stall TC will want to pull a little more but not so you have to hold the brake hard.

If the engine is not revving and you don't have to stand on the brakes its something internal to the trans and\or TC. If so its likely the TC.

When I come to a stop the engine revs a little when down shifting, then idles at 750 rpm. It doesn't seem like I have to apply hard brake pressure when stoped but if no brake it starts going. Will take to shop this week for test drive with diagnostic scanner, I hope it shows something. thanks

OK I had local transmission shop drive with scanner and pressure gauge. test show the truck is taking off in 3rd. gear, the computer is telling it to go through all the gears but isn't. They said it was the Gov. transducer press. sensor, and/or the gov. transducer pressure sellinode. Replaced both and now is shifting through all the gears fine. Thanks for all the help sorry it took me so long to get back. Hope this will help somebody with same problem.
