06 5.9 Smoke

Hello all,



Im a new subscriber to TDR and have to say I really love the tech put forth by the members and I'm looking forward to some good response to my question.



Truck is bone stock with 57,000 miles on it. Bought it back in January and it didn't smoke a single bit. Now 5 months later under any accelerator pedal position there is black smoke coming out the tail pipe, and it gets quite thick when I romp on it.



I have replaced the fuel filter with a PF7977, air filter with stock mopar replacement and ran a few tanks of fuel with some Diesel Kleen(white bottle) in the winter months.



Do you think I have an injector issue or air delivery??? Anyone else with similar issues?

My 06 does the same thing, and has every since I purchased it. I too have wandered if this is normal and from researching it, I have found answers all over the board. I'm subscribing to this thread.

I have seen 2 05's that smoke more stock than my truck does with a tune on it.

Do you tow at all? I notice that when I drive easy for a long time, then get on it, it really smokes! But it's the carbon buildup in the exhaust being blown out. It was really bad when my kitty was still part of the exhaust system.

Temperature could also be effecting it, maybe a sensor on the way out?

If you have sustained black or grey smoke under hard throttle and max boost it is almost always an injector dumping too much fuel. A friend with an 06 had the exact same issue develop over a month but the smoke was more grey. Ended up 2 injectors over fueling was the problem.



If you run a cylinder contribution test and look at the numbers you should see a spike on 1 or more cylinders from the extra fuel. Unless all of them are bad then its harder to tell. The tell tale smoke and a mpg drop would be indicative of failure on most if not all.



This is where gauges would come in handy, low side FP, boost and Pyro for starting to diagnose the issues. Even rail pressure can help narrow it down.

I do tow a 8,500 lb. trailer with the truck on occasion. The smoke actually seems to clear up a bit when the engine has more load and is making more boost.



Are there any sensors that typically cause these symptoms when they fail, or are about to fail?

Excessive smoke would probably be a MAP or IAT sensor. .

Do you have any gauges? Does it just smoke for a second or so then clear up? Or constant?

I want to throw something else out there... I do have the scheduled maintenance logs filled in by the PO, but they are not signed off by a dealer.

If the injectors are at fault, am I going to have trouble getting my dealer to honor the Cummins warranty on the injectors?

You shouldn't. There is no requirement to have dodge do the service.

No gauges as of yet, hoping to kill two birds with one stone(gauges and programmer) with an EDGE.



The smoke is constant when accelerating at any speed and fuel input, whether I ease on it or am more aggressive.



Is there a decent repair manual that I should be getting that would show test procedures on sensors?

The Edge will allow you to look at the MAP sensor to see if the boost/IAT look good, thou without a mechanical boost gauge it's hard to compare. I don't know if the Edge will show you air temp/barometric pressure from the sensor in the intake tube or not.

Check for boost leaks as well.

Right, which the standard PID for IAT is read from the MAP sensor. . the PID I don't know if the Edge can read or not is the one from the intake tube.

If there is any left, depends on when he bought it. My dad's 06 has been out of warranty for 8 months, and not by miles.

check the intake post air cleaner and pre-turbo for dust.
