06 black oil

Bought an new 2006 3500 6spd. Changed oil at 3000 miles, notice oil was REALLY black. Checked it today after only 300 miles of driving since oil change and found the oil was already REALLY black again.



Check engine light came on today--I'm wondering if I might have an emissions problem?????



I had a 2003 3500 6spd with 70,000 miles and never had dark, let alone REALLY black oil.

My 06' oil gets black alot faster than my 96'. Others have chimed in previously with similar results.

Mine is pretty black at 5000. Didn't like it and glad to see it seems to be normal.

You can thank the emission police for the extra soot in the oil. By the way, it's normal.

Oil is supposed to be black, if it's not black the detergent is not doing a very good job of cleaning. Not to mention unless you flush the entire engine with brake cleaner your not getting all the old oil out.

Mine is always black immediately after an oil change... before I even get the truck out of the garage. I suppose if I changed it 2 or 3 times right in a row it would be clean for a day or two, but what't the point of that?

Yeah me too, start the truck to check pressure then check oil level and it's as black as what came out. Just the way it is, you'll get used to it.

I have considered installing the BMK-11 bypass filtration from Amsoil, but I think it will still be black. The detergents in the oil, 3rd injection event, soot/pollution/emissions stuff - all of it must contribute to the black. Oh well, just the way it is.

I put on the BMK-11 setup and guess what... no more black oil Oo. . Its just really, really dark grey!! :-laf

Sorry for the last reply! i have been wondering about the FS 2500! i have always used BK-11 from amsoil in my 96 12 valve. i want to know if anyone has used it and has good luck with it. i am in the market for a bypass system and want to get the best for the money!

The company that makes the units are darn proud of 'em. The replacement elements are nothing more than oversized rolls of TP. Buy a Frantz or Motor Guard filter, then buy some Scott 1000 rolls at Wal Mart if you are looking for a tightly wound roll of cellulose... it's a lot cheaper and works just as well.

I agree w/everyone about the black oil... but do not know why your CEL came on. Someone else could probably tell ya how to look for a code.

my '03 305/555 doesn't turn black until 5-6000 miles but my neighbors 325/610 truck turns black on her first dailey commute [160 mile].

Yup... my 03 would stay clean for a long time, the 06 on the other hand... black right away, but slightly less black with the bypass filter installed.

Black oil is a normal thing for these truck. Mine gets black with one cycle through the engine. The best way to give you piece of mind with your oil is to have oil samples burned at every oil change interval. I run AMSOIL and change my oil every 10,000 miles and have samples burned by a company called blackstone. The sample with let you know whats wearing and the oil change requirements for your particular engine.



Also, to check your codes, insert your key and turn the key to the on position but DO NOT START IT. Alternate from off to on three times and your codes should pop up where your odometer shows milage.

Well i got an fs2500 great set up! yes it was higher then most but it is all layed out and the install was a snap!!!! installed and running in less then a half an hour! we will see what it does to my oil in a few months!

Your oil will still be black. That doesn't mean it isn't good anymore. Soot, which is turning your oil black is sub-micronic. Something like 1/100th of a micron. It will not do any harm unless it starts to clump together which any good oil will stop from happening. Even my one micron Oilguard filter which fed into a sub-micronic MotorguardTP filter would not remove the soot.
