06 code retrieval?

My 02 and 05 displays the codes in a readable form in the odometer display when cycling the key3 times but a friend of mine has an 06 with 6500 miles and the CEL came on and I went to get the codes and it will not give them in a readable form it gave them in a flash code style. Is this normal or is there a different way to get them in the odometer display like the 02-05?

Reading codes

Mine is a early 06' and it does read them out.

Think i remember reading that there is a mid year change there on the 06's.
