Dodge's plan for next engine?

Over the years I have accumulated some knowledge of parts to carry for my '91 Ford just in case there's a problem.

Sounds like folks are having some lift pump issues, and other issues that'll leave you on the side of the road, with the 3rd Gen Dodge trucks. I'd like to know what I should carry IN my '06 truck so that I can make repairs and stay on the road.

I frequently pull a horse trailer. Breaking down on the road for more than a couple hours is NOT AN OPTION (i. e. , I'd have to find someone to pick up my horses and board them overnight (expdn$ive), get the trailer towed somewhere, get the truck towed somewhere, and potentially take time off work while waiting for the nearest Dodge dealer to fix the truck).

Are the lift pumps on '06 trucks in the fuel tanks (worst possible location) or elsewhere? Can an electric pump be added without voiding the warranty (commonly done to old Ford diesels like mine)? Other parts I should carry besides the obvious (belts, etc. )

Buy a FASS fuel system and fuel pressure gauge if you dont want the in tank unit.

Or build your own fuel system using a holly or the like pump and go from there.

Also, the FASS 2 utilizes your factory filtration system.

Always have a cell phone and it helps to have some phone numbers ready for services in regularly traveled areas.

I just turned over 60,000 on my truck. Original u-joints, tires, brakes, ball joints, etc so my truck so far has proven to be pretty reliable. I did break a power steering hose not too long ago and it requires ATF4 fluid. Try finding some of THAT when your not near a dealer. Kinda important since the power steering pump also provides power brake assist. I now keep a couple quarts in my tool box. I carry a spare fuel filter and a socket to get the top off the fuel filter housing, a cigarette lighter plug-in air compressor and tire plug kit. That's the extent of my emergency kit.

Lift Pump

Think we have only seen one lift pump problem

(posted) with an '05 . . . so far.

You might try a search.

IMO - FASS - be careful "changing/adding" - dealers seem

to be under the gun by D/C to void warranties!

[Of course, can vary from dealer to dealer]

Maybe the most important "spares" are for the horses

in back - rather than the ones in front!

Enjoy your '06!

One truck with a CP3 intank pump so far that I have read also, but the retrofitted VP44s are going to be a problem.

I have a FASS (installed it last weekend) and I agree 100%, changing anything will cause them to void/scutenize your warranty... I have decided that the factory warranty is not worth the paper it is written on (I think DC is trying to get out of any 7/70 warranty work... the reason they dropped it on the new models)... trying to get anything warrantied is like pulling teeth and I decided to basically throw it away by doing my own mods... it wasn't worth the aggrevation of dealing with people who have no clue. On a side note, the FASS so far has seemed to be one of the best mods I have one to date... the RockTech sensor being a close second.

And, following murphy's law, you can have spare everything for known problems in your truck and it will be something else that leaves you sitting!!

My Emergency kit includes:

3 days of MRE's

Water tablets

Emergency blanket

Glock 19 w/ 4 mags & 100 rds ammo

SKS w/ 50 rds ammo

Trioxane fuel bars

First aid kit

Duct tape

SOG knife

Camp axe

3 LED flashlights

32 AA batteries

Tow strap

2 jacks (learned from experience)

Jumper cables

bungee cords

10 gallons of diesel in military diesel cans

Siphon pump

Oh wait... you meant just truck parts didn't you? :)

As Boonieman said, a spare filter and socket for the cap and a couple of quarts of ATF+4. I also care a spare LP (not applicable in the 2005), spare serpentine belt, gallon of oil, oil filter and wrench, small tool kit, bottle of diesel 911, 12v air compressor, radial tire repair kit, Xtreme tape (bonds to itself and can repair hoses, fuel lines, etc. ) duct tape, tie wraps, fuses, diesel fuel conditioner and winterizer, spare fuel cap (in case the locking one freezes up- I've had that happen) plus other things I'm too lazy to go out to the truck and list. When I change out my hoses for the first time I will put the old ones in this kit as spares. This is truck only, not the people/survival type items.

Spare fuel filter

Spare oil filter

3/8" drive set

1/2" ratchet (for fuel filter cap and idler pulley)

1-1/8" deep-well socket (for fuel filter cap)

Oil filter cap wrench (with 12" 3/8" extension)

Assorted screwdrivers

Pliers, Channel-Loks, needle-nose w/side cutter

1 qt ATF+4

2 qt. motor oil

Small tube of di-electric grease

Spare serpentine belt

Flashlight

Assorted fuses (extra 20A for trailer circuits)

A few 194 bulbs(for the trailers)

A couple 1156 bulbs

(Horse trailer has sealed combination rear light units. I keep a spare one of those in one of the brush boxes in that trailer. )

Small spool of 12 ga. utility wire and Scotch-Loks

Triangles and fusees

10# fire extinguisher

Cell charger cord

Rags

Fueling gloves

When towing, I throw wheel chocks, a 6-ton bottle jack, and a 4-way lug wrench in the bed, along with the 4x6 block my trailer jack was resting on (handy for helping the bottle jack reach the trailer frame). All except the chocks ride in the 5-gal pail I use to cover the jack and pigtail when the trailer is parked.

Winter, add--

Brush/scraper combo w/ extension handle

Washer Fluid

2 stylishly decorative blankets

Chemical hand warmers

Mittens (with the flap to free up my fingers) and stocking cap

Cheap, stowable rubber boots (Can you tell I'm not always dressed for roadside troubleshooting?)

Snickers bars and Paydays

Trenching tool

Tube sand (for the sand, not the weight)

Empty water bottle (It gets cold where I live and travel. Stored water would freeze on a daily basis. I figure snow melts faster and easier than ice If I need hydration)

Without going out to the truck to be sure, I think that about covers my kit.
