P0191 - Is the fuel rail pressure sensor. I've had it about 9 times, each time back to the dealer to have it cleared, told it is a 'computer glitch'. Frankly I don't think so, somethings up that no one has figured out how to fix yet. I have not had the 513 so I cannot tell you what that's about. As I questioned my service mgr and we discussed the 'logic' of why this code is happening, he got totally lost in it, the tech had no clue either. I spent a little time with the service manual cd and I think it comes from one of two things - either low pressure on the rail as in not enough 'momentary' fuel, or it gets tripped due to too much fuel too many times and multiple bypass returns to reduce fuel pressure overload on the rail - that equal a designated number in count by the computer which then trips the code. If the first one is true, then something is needed to elevate the fuel pressure to the rail as the pump is not taking care of business. If the second one is true then there is still a fuel pump issue but it is more related to the injectors being able to handle the volume which suggests they are undersized to do the job. I had a gas engine turboed car that kept having a rail sensor code issue and the computer in it tripped the code due to the air/fuel ratio and that was caused by not enough intake air. That's why I put in gauges, to keep an eye on the fuel pressure. Either I will see the pressure drop off or it will spike high momentarily or possibly even have a little duration. Hopefully I will see it. Since the comuter logic could be designed like my other vehicle, I decided to do the mod to the air box and bring in fresh air from a secondary source. Since that mod I have not had the code again. So, until the code rears it's ugly head again, or Dodge comes out with a fix for that code, I'm waiting to see if it was a fuel to air problem that I may have solved already by my mod. These computer chech so many parameters simultaneously it is hard to nail this kind of stuff down easily. Maybe Dodge is reading all our posts to get some direction. Several people with the 06's have had this code, I have no idea how many have seen repitition like I have. I could be the other code is relevant to a high pressure issue? If both of them are connected by one being high pressure on the rail and the other is about low pressure, then you would be directed to the pump?
I also have been thinking about the possibility of the low pressure situation also being caused by the computer signaling the fuel dump to the relief valve inapropriately? Takes me back to the sensor-p0191 code in their logic diagrams. My tech says the sensor checks out OK. Since I am new to diesels this is becoming one great big learning lesson. Maybe someone here can shed a little more light into this who understands how the add-on boxes fool sensors, etc because they will then understand the computer better. Guess this all becomes just food for thought.
