I had a customer with a turn signal problem in a 06. It works on the truck but will not work out of the tow package factory wiring. Our 05 has turn signal fuses under the hood, where are they at on the 06?

The 06 is not the same. The request signal is sent from the m/f switch to the emic which then is bussed to the tipm from where it is hardwired to the trailer wiring.

These new trucks are not for the faint of heart :-laf

You may have had a problem in the trailer taking out the tipm

What is a tipm?

I'm guessing that stude works as a tech at a dealer. Since it's common to use acronyms to describe, control units, Bob was simply speaking in dealer tech speak to what I presume to be another dealer tech. While it would have been nice for the rest of us to know what those acronyms mean, it's a safe bet he answered the original poster's question.

I do work at a dealership, but we sell the trailers not the trucks. It strikes me as a problem that we will see alot of in the future. We have alot of customers that come in here with bad trailer wiring to be fixed. It could be a trailer issue, but how does a guy correct the truck side of it? The technical names did go over my head. The owners manual gave us no help , so I do not have any resource for this truck. Is there a reset? I plugged a scan tool into the truck and it came up reading ERROR. Any help is appreciated, thanks for the replys everyone.

Is there a reference for the wiring anywhere?

Thanks

Multi-function switch,

electronic/mechanical instrument cluster,

totally integrated(inteligent in some pub's),power module

It wouldn't help much to describe the system in any detail if you don't have the hardware to diagnose the system. The engineers that designed it are asking for phone calls from the techs working on it now for feedback. Basicaly the new vehicles are just a computer network where most the modules share info in case they need it. The tipm has eliminated fuses in many cases like we have done in other D/c vehicles in the past. Switches are no longer swithes,in many cases they are sensors. This has it's pro's and con's. My opinion... ... ... ... I bought an 05 after I learned of the 06 changes :-laf You won't be fixing these issues at a fuel stop while traveling :(

Don't you just love it when someone throws out more abbreviated mumbo tech with no explanation. Wow I'm impressed.

I am also impressed with all of the info you have brought to the tdr over the years :-laf :-laf

What does this mean for accessories?

Can we add a bed plug?

Also, should all other accessories be wired off the battery only?

This sounds like multi-plex wiring found on bigger trucks, but they usually provide a power distribution center, does the 06 Dodge have one somewhere?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I haven't done a lot of experimenting on the 06's yet. But any mistakes will be costly :( . Yes any add-ons should be to the battery not through any existing electronics.

Anything you wire that runs off another circuit like lights should be installed using relays run off the factory circuit. Most all of the higher current circuits on the new vehicles are controlled by high side or low side drivers. They are very sensitive to load, and any added load the computer is not expecting results in the circuit being shut down. You really can't overload them in theory, but they still do not function if overloaded because they are shut down.

As far as putting a plug into the bed, My plans are as follows

I bought a "T" that plugs into the factory trailer tow wire harness (it said fits 06 on package). That will cover the lights.

I was going to splice the brake and 12V into the factory trailer tow package, but I am tempted to run a new wire from the brake control back to the in bed connector, and maybe a 12V feed back from the battery that is switched with a relay so its only on when Key is on.

Maybe this is the reason my "line of fire" light bar is acting funny. I thought it was the light bar and maybe its the wiring-------but its plugged into the 4 connector under the bumper.

Relay question

How specifically do we add the relay? We still need to monkey with a truck wire somewhere, what wire? What do you use for the relay? I like the idea of having extra's wired through the ignition. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also, there are T-connectors for bed plugs. For us, they are a backordered item. We first saw them at SEMA, and I tried to buy some right then, but had no luck. I checked this morning and we are still a week away from seeing them. I am not 110% convinced they are OK on 06, but should be good for sure on the other trucks. I have studied this some, Valley, Hopkins and Pollack make these T-connectors for most late model full-size trucks. They have both the brake control and aux power in the connector. (What's suprising is that at least Hopkins has had these available for some time, they made the last catolog, but we didn't see them till SEMA)

Again, thanks.

Relays are driven off the light circuit you are trying to duplicate. If you want to add additional tail lights, use the existing tail light wire to control the relay. Then use an auxiliary 12v supply to power the additional lights. The control side of the relay uses very little current so the truck computer does not mind it. The load side of the relay handles all the heavy work using the 12 auxiliary supply.

IIRC, a common Bosch 30A relay draws about . 75 amp. However, the latching and unlatching of a relay can cause electrical noise (or spike) in the circuit that may affect sensitive circuitry in the controlled area network (CAN). I don't know if it will negatively impact this situtation, but it's something to be aware of, and I have encountered many situations where this spike was bad for the system I was working on. A switching transister may be a better choice to activate the relay. Smaller relays are also an option.

You may find some answers by studying the truck schematic on the Dodge bodybuilder website http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/

so am I reading this right or did I get lost somewhere. If I tap into my 7pin factory harness to run my fifthwheel plug it will not work? Also trailer brake controller is still plug and play?
